YPSILANTI, Mich. —- The sound keeps echoing across the friendliest basketball arena in the Mid-American Conference, the Convocation Center the home of the low-flying Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team-the end of the this basketball season is ending.

Even the joyous occasion of celebrating an Eastern Michigan University legend, one of the greatest player to wear the green and white, point guard Earl Boykins will join the immortal Eastern Michigan University basketball players by having his number retired Sunday afternoon Feb 27, 2011.

Joining the Eagles for the party is the Western Michigan University Broncos; the last time these two teams played back on January 16, 2011 the Broncos defeated the Eagles 65-48 at the nosiest basketball arena the home of the Broncos University Arena.

The Eagles played the game in Kalamazoo, Michigan back on that snowy Sunday afternoon without the service of power forward Brandon Bowdry who was serving a imposed one-game suspension delivered by Eastern Michigan University basketball coach Charles Ramsey, he said the suspension was because of Bowery’s actions were detrimental to the team.

Western Michigan University appreciated the hospitality by Eastern Michigan University and left the party with 87-60 victory over the Eagles spoiling the ceremonial atmosphere in side the Convocation Center in front of 1,570 disgruntled and disappointed basketball fans.

“I apologies that was a horrible effort,” Ramsey said after the game. “I am disappointed in the seniors. Somebody needed to take control,”

The inability of the Eastern Michigan University offense to score points from the field created a lot of miss chances by the Eagles and too many good looks by the Broncos.

Leading the offensive charge for the Eagles, small forward Derek Thompson with 20 points and power forward Brandon Bowdry who scored 16 points and 10 rebounds for his 37th career double-double.

The Eagle offense averages only 60 points per game which ranks the Eagles in 10th in the conference and the Eagles are the poorest shooting team in the Mid-American Conference shooting an unimpressive 38.4 percent.

The Eagles finished the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field.

“We could not throw it in the ocean,” Ramsey said about his team’s lack of offense. “Western gets credit they were aggressive and they did what ever they wanted.”

Part of the problem according to Ramsey is his team is still a young team but the Eagles just finishing there 28th game of the season and the question how long and how many games during a season when your team becomes an experienced team.

All season long the key for the Eagles is the defense because the pressure of the defense creates the offensive flow that gives the Eagles confidence playing offense.

The scoring defense is first in the league holding the opponent to just 63 points a game, so how does a team that relies on the defense to create so much but have the results that are – embarrassing!

“It was an odd game,” Ramsey said. “It was just spinning out of control.”

Western Michigan University offense scored 42 points in the middle Bronco forward Flenard Whitfield and center Matt Stainbrook played with little resentence from any Eagle defender. They controlled the low blocks on offense and defense.

“We played inside out and it open up the floor, “Whitfield said. “We are dialed in and focused. “

Whitfield scored 16 points to lead the Broncos and pulled down four rebounds his team mate Stainbrook helped with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Western Michigan University basketball coach Steve Hawkins said his team just needed to stay focused.

“It was a game we needed and it keeps us in the race,” Hawkins said. “This is the best game we have we played all year.”

Before the game Ramsey allowed Boykins to speak to his team before the game. Ramsey said it was nice talk and that Boykins talked about what it takes to win – it just was wasted words because the effort according to Ramsey just too embarrassing.

Eastern Michigan University will be on the road to the house on the prairie in DeKalb, Illinois and the home of the Huskies of  Northern Illinois University Wednesday night March 2, 2011 the tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
