NHL Trade Deadline Live Blog

3:35pm – Looks like other than maybe a couple of more deals, NHL GMs are done for the day, and for that matter, are done until June. If more trades break I will report them. Thanks for stopping by!

3:31pm – Haven’t reported any minor league deals, but I will now because it involves the Habs! Canadiens have traded Brett Festerling (acquired from the Ducks in Lapierre trade) to Atlanta for goaltender Drew MacIntyre

3:21pm – Oilers are done. I am shocked that they didn’t at least unload pending UFAs Jim Vandermeer and Ryan Jones.

3:16pm – Trade #12 – Freddy Modin has been dealt to Calgary.

3:14pm – Trade #11 – Canucks have also traded for Chris Higgins. A 3rd round pick and prospect Evan Oberg to Florida. (Sportsnet)

3:13pm – Caps get their 2nd line center. Canucks get their 4th line center.

3:11pm – Trade #10 – Max Lapierre has been traded to the Vancouver Canucks (Eric Stephens – OC Register)

3:08pm – No trades for Buffalo. They are done too.

3:06pm – NY Islanders are done. Shocked that Konopka and Martinek were not dealt.

3:05pm – Trade #9 – Jason Arnott has been traded to Washington in exchange for David Steckel and a 2nd round pick (Sportsnet)

3:03pm – Avs are done. Flyers are done. Brad Richards was not dealt.

3:01pm – Trade #8 – John Mitchell has been traded from the Leafs to the New York Rangers (TSN)

3:00pm – ….and there’s the deadline, but stay tuned for deals that trickle in up until about 4:30pm.

2:56pm – Gotta say, I’m going to be a bit disappointed if this is basically it for the day.

2:51pm – For what it’s worth, both the Sharks and Sens are rumored to be done for the day.

2:46pm – All kinds of rumors that trades for Arnott and Liles are imminent.

2:45pm – Keep in mind that even though the deadline is 3pm, trades often trickle in up until about 4:30pm.

2:41pm – Just under 20 minutes to go. Arnott and Liles among many others are still available.

2:40pm – Something cooking in Montreal! Ryan White travelled with the team to Atlanta but has been told not to go on the ice.

2:34pm – Kings paid a major price to get Penner, but Lombardi had to do something.

2:32pm – Just got a text that there is a chance Ales Hemsky could be moved to Phoenix. Boedker would be going back to Edmonton.

2:24pm – Trade #7 – Dustin Penner to the LA Kings for a 1st round pick, Colten Teubert and a conditional 2nd/3rd round pick (TSN)

2:17pm – The dangers of twitter: someone created a fake Nick Kypreos account and said Habs traded for Penner. “Trade” spread like a wild fire.

2:06pm – Trade #6 – Anaheim Ducks have acquired Brad Winchester from St. Louis for a 3rd round pick (SOURCE: HockeyBuzz)

2:04pm – Just under an hour to go…here come the trades!

2:01pm – There are some rumors that Brad Winchester is on his way out of St. Louis.

2:00pm – When TSN interviews Curtis McElhinney, you know it hasn’t been an exciting day

1:59pm – Chicago wanted a defensive D-man. That’s not what Campoli is. Pierre McGuire suggests another Hawks trade could happen very soon.

1:56pm – Trade #5 – Chris Campoli has been dealt to Chicago. Ottawa receives a 2nd round draft pick and Ryan Potulny. (TSN)

1:53pm – Various rumors: Edmonton still working the phones…Chris Campoli likely to be dealt…Penguins are up to something too

1:48pm – Chicago will be acquiring a defenseman very shortly (SOURCE: TSN)

1:42pm – Trade #4 – Various outlets reporting that Florida has traded Bryan Allen to Carolina for Sergei Samsonov.

1:40pm – Why does Brian Burke always wear a tie if he just takes it off all the time?

1:38pm – If Bryan Allen does get traded to Carolina, we can thank Dale Tallon for being involved in 75% of the action thus far.

1:34pm – The Panthers are still active. They are discussing a deal with Carolina that would see the teams swap Bryan Allen for Sergei Samsonov’s expiring contract. (SOURCE: Harvey Filakov – Sun Sentinel)

1:26pm – ProSportsBlogging has been told that Edmonton will trade Ryan Jones for a draft pick.

1:19pm – Reasons for limited activity so far: the number of trades over the past few weeks, too many buyers, too many guys with no trade clauses.

1:01pm – 2 hours to go…I think a good over/under is 15 trades. I’m optimistic and taking the over.

12:58pm – I like that trade more for Phoenix than I do for Columbus. Upshall will bring some good depth to the Jackets’ top 3 lines though.

12:53pm – Trade #3 – Phoenix has traded Scottie Upshall and Sami Lepisto to Columbus for Rostislav Klesla (SOURCE: Sportsnet)

12:51pm – Don’t get too excited Habs fans, but there are reports that Pierre Gauthier is also talking to Edmonton about Dustin Penner.

12:45pm – There are some rumors that Washington is targeting Jason Arnott. If that’s true, would be a good move by the Caps.

12:36pm – Just got a text from a good source that Ron Hainsey might be coming back to Montreal. Looking into it.

12:33pm – Lots of talk out of Edmonton but no deals yet. Players rumored to be available are Jim Vandermeer, Ladislav Smid, Ryan Jones and of course Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner.

12:30pm – Here’s an LOL for Habs fans; there are rumblings that Max Lapierre could be dealt out of Anaheim, especially if they trade for Konopka.

12:19pm – Brad Richards said he has yet to be presented with any proposals, nor has he given them a list of teams he would accept a trade to.

12:11pm – I don’t fully understand the Dennis Wideman acquisition by Washington. They now have 9 defensemen including Tom Poti on IR. Don’t be shocked to see the Caps flip one of their D in a trade for a center.

12:05pm – More waiver news – Ty Conklin NOT claimed; Curtis McElhinney claimed by Ottawa

12:02pm – Calgary Flames have claimed Brett Carson off of waivers from Carolina. Atlanta Thrashers have claimed Rob Schremp off of waivers from NY Islanders (SOURCE: ESPN)

12:00pm – 3 hours to the deadline. This is when the action really starts. Buckle up!

11:56am – Keep in mind that in about 10 minutes, there could be some activity on the waiver wire. I have a feeling Ty Conklin will be claimed by someone.

11:50am – Jimmy Howard has signed a 2 year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings. He will earn $2.25 million per season (SOURCE: Sportsnet)

11:45am – Trade #2 – Washington Capitals have acquired Dennis Wideman from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a 3rd round pick and prospect Jake Hauswirth (SOURCE: Mike Vogel)

11:43am – TSN reporting that the Detroit Red Wings are close to coming to terms on a contract extension with Jimmy Howard.

11:36am – Further to Spezza; there is a very big difference between “taking calls” and “shopping”. Bryan Murray is NOT shopping Spezza, but he is listening to what his market value is.

11:25am – Back up and running. Just got off the phone with top source. 2 things I can confirm; Konopka to Ducks is VERY close. The Sens are taking calls on Spezza. He probably won’t be dealt today given his salary, but given what transpired last summer, he would absolutely waive his no trade to go elsewhere.

10:52am – No chance Panthers are done! Weiss, Booth, Allen, Wideman, Vokoun, Reasoner and Higgins are all available. Olesz and Bernier too, but it’s unlikely teams will be interested in those 2.

10:45am – Some rumors: Ducks like Konopka (Eric Stephens – OC Register), Habs like Oduya (Tony Marinaro – TEAM 990), Bruins won’t be making any moves today (Renaud Lavoie – RDS)

10:41am – Winner of that one is Florida. Bergfors will be a nice addition.

10:37am – First trade! Florida Panthers trade Radek Dvorak and a 5th round pick to Atlanta for Niclas Bergfors and Patrick Rismiller (TSN)

10:35am – For what it’s worth; this is right about the time when the first trade went down last year.

10:32am – Mark Stuart has signed a 3 year extension with Atlanta worth $1.7 million per year (Sportsnet)

10:30am – TSN suggesting that Nashville will be active today. Have talked to Edmonton about both Ales Hemsky and Ladislav Smid.

10:18am – With the Chris Phillips signing, Ottawa is trying to move Filip Kuba and Chris Campoli to open up some spots for next season. Its possible Chris Neil will be dealt today as well.

10:15am – So much for my Konopka to Canucks pitch. Vancouver is not in on him. He will get moved by the deadline though, just a matter of where. He would be perfect for the Habs; he wins faceoffs and drops the mitts.

10:09am – Mark Stuart very close to signing a 3 year extension with Atlanta (SOURCE: Kevin Allen – USA Today)

10:07am – TSN panel is suggesting that Ales Hemsky will likely be moved by the 3pm deadline. I don’t think the Habs will be involved, but I think he would be a good fit.

10:01am – Williams deal seems a bit expensive, but he’s been a great fit in LA. They are set at RW with Brown, Williams and Simmonds locked up.

9:57am – Not a trade, but a great move by the LA Kings. They have signed RW Justin Williams to a 4 year deal worth $14.6 million. (SOURCE: Bob McKenzie – TSN)

9:52am – Thrashers are getting calls on defensemen Ron Hainsey and Johnny Oduya (SOURCE: Pierre LeBrun – ESPN)

9:49am – Vancouver has been searching for a 4th line center all season. Konopka would be a great fit and wouldn’t cost much.

9:43am – TSN panel discussing the value of Zenon Konopka, mentioning that he is top 5 in the NHL in faceoffs. I wonder what kind of a stick he uses…

9:37am – Here’s a weird rumor; apparently Sens have inquired about Ales Hemsky. I couldn’t even guess what they would offer to get him given Edmonton’s asking price.

9:29am – General consensus is that Brad Richards will either be a Dallas Star or a New York Rangers at 3:01pm today.

9:20am – Many reports had Colorado trading John-Michael Liles to Toronto. TSN reports that a deal is off the table. If a team is willing to offer a 2nd round pick, I think he moves.

9:17am – For teams needing a 2nd line center with some size and experience, Jason Arnott will be a great pickup.

9:06am – Normally there are 25+ deals on deadline day, but the quality of the players is pretty low. Today; it seems like there will be fewer trades but better players involved.

8:56am – “Weiss likes Toronto, however, at the moment the Leafs are not planning on making an offer. That may change as day evolves.” (SOURCE: Darren Dreger – TSN)

8:53am – Asking price from the Rangers for Brad Richards is Anisimov, a 1st round pick and a prospect (SOURCE: Larry Brooks – NY Post)

8:49am – Radek Martinek is another pending UFA who is expected to be moved today (SOURCE: Mike Brophy – Sportsnet)

8:44am – When I heard that Pierre Gauthier was on a flight this morning rather than working the phones, I was almost as furious as I was last night at 8:49 & 59 seconds (inside joke). Turns out he’s already in Atlanta.

8:41am – There are reports that Columbus D-man Jan Hejda is available. Classic deadline rental player. The Craig Rivet waiver claim made him expendable. (SOURCE: Mark Spector – Sportsnet)

8:34am – I’m up and ready to go! Don’t expect any deals before 10am. I’ll be posting more rumors and speculation in the first few hours.

2:15am – That’s it for tonight! Will be up bright and early to get going again.

2:11am – Another Strickland rumor has the Washington Capitals showing interest in Andy McDonald. Interesting considering they just dealt Brad Boyes in the past few hours, and Erik Johnson not too long ago. A major shakeup is underway in St. Louis. (SOURCE: Andy Strickland)

1:42am – Ok I lied, no sleep just yet! Just got an email from our Oilers correspondent that rumors of Ladislav Smid to Chicago are picking up speed. (SOURCE: ProSportsBlogging.com)

1:01am – This will likely be my last update of the night. There are rumors that Randy Jones is on the verge of being dealt from Tampa Bay to Carolina. Tampa has 9 D, so this makes sense. (SOURCE: Andy Strickland – www.truehockey.com)

12:24am – Surprised at the return for Brad Boyes. That’s a guy who I thought would have been a good fit in Montreal. If I was Pierre Gauthier, that would have been worth a 2nd rounder.

12:10am – Brad Boyes traded to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2nd round pick (this technically happened on February 27, but it still counts in my books!)

12:05am – Its officially February 28 – NHL Deadline Day. Keep this window opened during the day tomorrow and click refresh to get breaking news as soon as it happens and instant analysis on the trades.

Very pleased with the moves Calgary made.

Added a little depth and gave nothing of substance away!

Like Campoli to Chicago! Richards should’ve went to NY, but staying in Dallas may be what’s best. Colorado was just plain stupid!
