Update at 2:10am – The Detroit Red Wings are looking at Lee or Campoli to add depth to their defense core. This from two sources. Wings would be willing to send a prospect or draft pick back to Ottawa for either player.
After talking with a few scouts and GM’s tonight, the Ottawa Senators would rather trade Brian Lee before unloading Chris Campoli. Now in a perfect world Sens GM Bryan Murray really wants to move Filip Kuba. If he is unable to move Kuba look for Ottawa to buyout him out this summer. Sens owner Eugene Melnyk has stated to management that he would use the money he spent on Jonathan Cheechoo’s buyout on a buyout for Kuba. Plus he needs to get to the salary floor with so much money coming off the books this summer.
A possible trade scenario that might not take place on Monday but could very well take place this summer would be the Sens trading Sergei Gonchar to the Minnesota Wild for forward Martin Havlat. The former Sens almost signed here 2 years ago but Murray couldn’t get it done with Melnyk wanting Alexei Kovalev.
One has to think that with Lee, Campoli, Kuba and Gonchar all on the block that at least one of them is moved by 3pm EST on Monday. The Hawks will be the best trade partner at this point(read my blog from late Sunday night) but don’t rule out the Sharks and Caps as possible trade partners with the Sens.
Murray is taking calls on Jason Spezza. Yes, even with the NTC Spezza is garnering alot of interest. Teams are desperate for a number one center and you just might get a team overpaying to match another rival’s move on deadline day. If Murray gets a trade offer he can’t resist, he will undoubtedly approach Spezza to waive his NTC. Murray threw Spezza under the bus this summer with his wanting out of Ottawa comments so I wouldn’t put it past Murray to possibly move Spezza.
More to come.
