Ovechkin highlight goal lifts Caps 2-1 over the Islanders in OT

The Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 2-1 in overtime. Brooks Laich scored with under a minute to go in regulation and Alex Ovechkin scored on a back hand finish after a mad dash through, what seemed, was the entire Islanders team (bench included)!
The three trade deadline acquisitions fit in very nicely from the drop of the puck. Marco Sturm (picked up off of waivers) had a break away on his second shift, just 2:16 into period one. His shot was blocked by net minder Nathan Lawson (38 saves) of the Islanders, but he looked calm, cool, and collected moving in on goal. Sturm skated on the first line with Ovi and Nichlas Backstrom. Jason Arnott (trade with New Jersey) had the assist to Laich with under a minute to go. The fact that this combo was on the ice at a crucial time, at the end of the game, speaks volumes to how well they played together. Finally, Dennis Wideman… he was awesome! He led all Caps skaters with over 26 mintutes of total ice time, he was physical, and poised with the puck.
All three new players CAN BE impact players. The question going into tonight’s game – will these new faces mesh immediately with the new Caps defensive system, the special teams, and the brotherhood within the Caps locker room? In other words, how long will it take them to gel? If tonight’s home win is any indication of future results, the Caps made all the right moves at the trade deadline!
Let’s go Caps!
