Winning the must win game (Eagles 76 Hokies 61)

Maybe the Eagles were motivated by the Hokies saying they were the worst ACC road trip. Maybe they could have won this game with no motivation. That is how flat their opponent looked.
This previous Saturday, the Hokies had hosted ESPN’s College Gameday and gone on to defeat the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday night 64-60 for an emotional win that appeared to finally have Seth Greenberg, Malcolm Delaney, Jeff Allen, and co. off the bubble. Tuesday night against the Eagles was their senior night, however all the emotion from Saturday was clearly gone and they lead only for a short period early in the game.
Virginia Tech clearly did not have “it” on this night and the Eagles capitalized greatly. Boston College connected on 10-22 shots from beyond the arc. Virginia Tech had more airballs from three point land (four), than makes (three). Jeff Allen had put up 25 points and 19 rebounds in the team’s first meeting, a 58-56 Eagles victory in Chestnut Hill, but he was limited to 14 points and 3 rebounds in the rematch in Blacksburg. So many times this season the Eagles have been at a size disadvantage on the boards, but in this game they out-rebounded the Hokies 38 to 22.
Both the Hokies players and crowd seemed more interested in complaining about or taunting the officials than putting forth the effort usually seen on a senior night. Seth Greenberg and Jeff Allen both got hit with technicals for arguing with the referees. Greenberg was flagged when the game was still within reach and basically gave two free points to the Eagles.
Boston College has its own senior day this Saturday at noon against an inferior opponent, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and cannot afford a performance like Virginia Tech showed tonight; or like their game against the Miami Hurricanes. Wake Forest is dead last in the ACC after being ranked #1 overall a few short years ago and has nothing to play for. Coach Jeff Bzdelik does have some dangerous young players like Travis McKie who are capable of leading them to an upset if their opponent lets their guard down.
Also of note: Saturday’s game is the last before the ACC conference tournament and the Eagles cannot earn a bye into the quarterfinals. However, with a Virginia Tech loss at Clemson combined with a home win against Wake Forest they would earn the #5 ACC seed, meaning an rematch with Wake Forest and, with a win, avoiding North Carolina and Duke until at least the conference semifinals.
