Clippers-Rockets Preview (March 2)

The Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets, two teams headed in opposite directions, will collide Wednesday night at Staples Center.

Houston will be looking to win their season-best sixth-consecutive game, fresh off of a 103-87 drubbing at Portland on Tuesday.

The Clippers have lost five in a row, but will be getting their leading scorer, Eric Gordon, back from injury.

He’s been out of the lineup since January 22 nursing an injured right wrist. The team has gone just 4-14 in his absence.

This game will also mark the home debuts of Mo Williams and Jamario Moon, acquired the day before last week’s trade deadline from the Cleveland Cavaliers for Baron Davis.

Williams scored 16 points to go along with five assists and five steals in his first start for L.A. in Monday night’s loss at Sacramento. Moon chipped in with three points in four minutes off the bench.

Houston has taken both prior meetings between the teams this season, the last of which was a 96-83 win in Houston, the game after Gordon went down with injury.

The Clippers will be substantially tougher to beat Wednesday night.

Prior to the 11-game road trip, L.A. had established itself as one of the best home teams in the entire league.

The sensational rookie season of Blake Griffin combined with the youthful exuberance of the rest of the Clippers made them a fan favorite, and they were beating some of the league’s elite while selling out Staples Center.

The road trip may have been a bump in the road, but there is still enough time remaining in the season to salvage some pride heading into the future.

Gordon was an integral part of that Clipper hot streak in January, averaging nearly 27 points per game during a stretch that saw the Clippers go 7-2.

Griffin has struggled a bit in the two previous meetings with the Rockets, averaging “just” 19 points per game on 36 percent shooting.

Houston will be looking to climb over .500 for the first time this season, while the Clippers will be looking to right their own ship.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm PT.
