Niemi Inks Extension

In the wake of what was a quiet Trade Deadline day for San Jose, the Sharks announced yesterday that they have re-signed goaltender Antti Niemi to a 4-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth $3.8 million per year.
Niemi has been great since becoming the clear starter after Antero Niittymaki went down with an injury. Niemi has really turned his season around after a tough start boasting a 24-15-3 record with a 2.40 GAA and a .919 save percentage and is largely responsible for how well the Sharks have been playing of late.
I think this is a move Doug Wilson felt he had to make in part of the depleted goalie market in the NHL. Bringing Niemi back next season is a no brainer but the Niemi camp was probably looking for a long(er) term deal than having to go through something similar to last off-season. Four years is a bit excessive for me because this contract makes Niemi the only Shark signed through the 2014-2015 season. The price may be a little high as well but I guess Wilson has seen enough of his work ethic and capabilities from last post season to through his progression this season to lock him down as the team’s starter for the next four seasons.
The Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in a shootout last night, extending their division lead over Phoenix to four points. Niemi was the game’s 1st star stopping 18 of 19 shots faced and not allowing a goal during the shootout. San Jose will host Detroit on Thursday night at HP Pavilion.
