Opening Day Is Right Around The Corner

This is a great time of year  living in Florida, other than the great weather we have in March. It’s Spring Training, that means Opening Day is creeping upon us. As a Red Sox fan, this means the edition of the 2011 Red Sox will be loads of fun too watch. Expectations are high in Boston coming into the 2011 season. Boston missed the playoffs in 2010 and haven’t won a playoff game since October of 2008.

The Red Sox in 2010 were riddled with injuries the entire season, but then again their bullpen was a disaster for most of the season.  So injuries weren’t an excuse when talking about the 2010 Boston Red Sox.  Last season Papelbon had the worst season of his career.  ( is this his last season in a Red Sox uniform?? ) So what did Theo Epstein do during the winter?

He added Dan Wheeler, former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, and don’t forget about Alfredo Aceves who played a huge role when the Yankees won it all back in 2009. The only bright spot in the bullpen last year was flame thrower Daniel Bard, who often hits 100 mph with his fastball.  Let’s talk about Aceves who I believe is one of those under the radar signings that should have an impact this season. Aceves is one of those rubber arms, which is rare in today’s game.  In 59 career games with the dreaded Yankees he went 14-1! Including 10-1 during the Yankees championship season two years ago. Both Wheeler and Aceves are battle tested in the toughest division of them all, the American League East. When it comes to the bullpen it looks good on paper, but will it pay dividends during the season?
