The West Virginia Mountaineers took advantage of the energy their home crowd gave them and beat the 16th Ranked Uconn Huskies 65-56. The Mountaineers held the Huskies to just 2 field goals in the final 10 minutes to get the win, Joe Mazzulla led the way with 18 points and 5 assists, Kevin Jones also chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Uconn had a atrocious shooting night, they shot just 37% from the field on the evening. Shabazz(Baz) Napier was the only Husky to have decent shooting numbers, Baz shot 7 of 15. Baz had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Uconn came out flat and never seemed to recover enough to match West Virginia’s energy. I know I continue to say this, but I am impressed by this young team. Even in these tough losses, the reason being that you can see how talented they are and tell that these losses are from lack of experience and youth. These same kids will respond differently next year, or even later this season because every one of these games provides experience. Kemba Walker didn’t have a great game shooting the ball either, but he was hot from downtown. Kemba hit 4 of his 7 free throw attempts to finish the night with 22 points, earlier I said the team had come out flat and you can always tell if a Uconn team is aggressive by how many foul shots they took. Uconn only went to the line 7 times against the Mountaineers, another way to tell how aggressive they are is by their work on the boards. Uconn got out-rebounded again, this time it was by 7 in a close game. So their energy level, or lack of it definitely impacts the game. This Uconn team is very talented, but when they don’t bring their A game is when they fall apart. They are too young and inexperienced to come out flat or not be active on defense. They need to bring it every night, as these kids go on they will learn that. Just remember, according to all of the analysts Uconn wasn’t supposed to be this good so no matter what happens these kids have achieved something this year. I also think the best is yet to come for THIS team, THIS year. Uconn’s next game is against 7th ranked Notre Dame at home on Saturday at 2pm. Hopefully they can go into the post season with some momentum!!
