Street Hockey: Hawks Style

Posted By Anna Santiago On Mar 7 2011 @ 2:09 pm In Chicago Blackhawks | No Comments

On Friday, March 11, local youngsters in Washington, D.C. will get an opportunity of a lifetime: to play street hockey and attend a clinic put on by the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals, and will be presided over by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and First Lady Michelle Obama, no less.

The game and clinic are scheduled to happen after the Blackhawks attend a ceremony at the White House, where President Obama will honour the team for their 2010 Stanley Cup Championship win. The ceremony itself is standard; every year the president hosts a lunch and speeches are made and novelty jerseys are awarded. But the street hockey and clinic are new. The Let’s Move iniative is a program President Obama set up to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for American youth. The NHL and USA Hockey have collaborated with the program and are working to set up pro teams to help kids with their hockey skills.

The Blackhawks and Capitals will have to display some team comraderie as they work together with the kids in the program, but 2 days after it will be back to business as the two teams are set to face off against each other in the nation’s capital.

**Team notes: Jordan Hendry out for the rest of the season, recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL and Fernando Pisani is sidelined indefinately due to a head injury.
