After a windswept, water hazard filled Honda Classic, it’s time for this week’s What It Means:

Rory Sabbatini Returns to the Winner’s Circle: Sabbatini may be most known by casual fans for getting on Tiger Woods’ bad side a couple years ago but the player can play, as evidenced by his strong iron play this week at the Honda. Once again, however, he falls into this class of players that has trouble breaking through for the “big” win. We’re about to see if things will be different this time around for Sabbatini.

Seven of the 10 Winners on the PGA Tour Were Outside the Top 100 in the World Ranking at Time of Victory: That stat is courtesy of Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press and it’s a doozy. People talk all the time about how much deeper the fields at PGA Tour events have gotten in recent years and there’s the proof right there. On any given week probably 75% or more of the field has a legitimate chance to win. That’s great for the sport but arguably not so great for TV, with the possibility of a complete no-name winning an event.

Tommy Gainey’s Fifth Place Finish: Frequent readers of this post will know I’ve come to enjoy the personality and energy that Rickie Fowler brings to the PGA Tour. In that same vein, I think if Tommy Gainey can continue to have high finishes week-in-and-week-out he has the ability to create a similar type of fan following, albeit for different reasons.

Gainey’s “everyman” like swing relates more to weekend hackers than the perfection of an Adam Scott, and the fact that he wears two gloves on every shot automatically distinguishes himself from the rest of the field. If he continues his current success, watch out America: two glove players may spring up everywhere!
