Uconn Deals With Feisty DePaul

Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Mar 8 2011 @ 2:34 pm In UConn | No Comments

It’s the first day of the Big East Tournament, Uconn took on DePaul at noon. There is no reward for the winner of this game as the winner gets to face the Georgetown Huskies tomorrow at noon. Uconn had lost there last 6 Big East Tournament contests, so that streak is something to keep in  mind. The Huskies Beat the Blue Demons 97-71, the score is a bit misleading because the game was closer than the outcome.  Uconn jumped out early in the first half due to the pass first attitude of Kemba Walker. Walker made sure his teammates got involved early, Jeremy Lamb might have taken the most advantage of that by scoring 17 first half points. One of the highlights of the first half was on a Husky fast break where Shabazz Napier threw a no-look lob to Lamb who wasn’t able to catch it, but tapped it in with a defender in front of him. Uconn didn’t come out very sharp in the 2nd half, they were lacking focus and that’s not something you can do against an Oliver Purnell coached team. DePaul kept scratching and fighting until they got back into this game, until Kemba got going. Walker only  had 7 first half points, he decided to put his mark on this game in the 2nd half. Walker erupted for 19 points to lead his team to victory. Kemba’s final stat line was 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Uconn got great play from Shabazz Napier(Baz), Baz came in and ran the offense flawlessly for the most part. Baz finished with 11 points, 8 dimes, and 4 steals.  Alex Oriahki didn’t start today, yet he didn’t hang his head as he came in and produced to the tune of 13 points and 19 boards. If A.O. continues to be this assertive as Uconn goes forward, they WILL need him to be to advance in both the Conference Tourney as well as the NCAA. One thing that does need to change for Uconn as they go forward, they turned the ball over 20 times today and that’s RIDICULOUS and I’m sure Jim Calhoun will tell them so.
