PGA TOUR WHAT IT MEANS: Doral

A significant victory for a young star starts off this week’s What It Means:
Nick Watney Wins at Doral: I love Nick Watney’s game, his demeanor, and his ascent through the golfing ranks. Today’s victory at the Cadillac Championship is the third for the 29 year old and the highest profile one. He beat the best field so far this year in golf, and did it which fantastic shots at the end — a perfect drive onto the fairway on the difficult 18th, and a beautiful second shot to 12 feet to set up the winning birdie.
The Butch Harmon pupil now officially moves into that next class of players. Many forget in the Dustin Johnson rules fiasco of Whistling Straits that Watney was in the running for the PGA Championship before imploding on Sunday. Now, with another quality win behind him, he’ll certainly be someone to watch at Augusta in a month.
Rickie Fowler’s Sunday Charge to an 8th Place Finish: A hallmark of Tiger Woods’ career are what I call his “back door 10th place finishes” (like today), where he is out of contention, throws up a good number early on, and as the leaders crumble around him, ends up with a top 10. Fowler shot 66 today to finish 8th and to me that shows that he’s still focused on Sunday even when winning may be out of the realm of possibility.
It’s a good sign and one that will do him well as his career moves forward. He does need a win, however. And soon.
Tiger Woods’ Sunday Performance: After three days where he drove it all over the place, had a spotty short game and couldn’t make a putt inside of 15 feet to save his life, Tiger finally put it together today for a 66 and a 10th place finish. The 66 was the round of the day. Today it was accurate irons, leaving him putts on the CORRECT side of the hole that he mostly sank that made the difference.
I would watch very closely his play in the Tavistock Cup, the made-for-TV event between four country clubs that will be held at his home course at Isleworth Country Club tomorrow and Tuesday. It can be seen LIVE on Golf Channel at Noon ET both days. If he plays well there, it’ll be another positive step in a competitive environment.
