Gordon Returns, Helps Clippers Down Cavaliers

Think the presence of Eric Gordon may have something to do with the Clippers’ success?

Los Angeles improved to 15-5 in games in which Gordon has played since December 17 with a 100-92 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday afternoon at Staples Center.

Gordon, the Clippers’ leading scorer for the season, returned from a right wrist injury to score 29 points, including six three-point buckets.

Blake Griffin, who had been struggling in his last seven games, looked like his old self in this game, scoring 30 points to go along with eight rebounds and eight assists. He shot 12-20 from the field and made all six of his free-throw attempts.

It was the sixth consecutive game in which Griffin failed to record a double-double; by far his longest streak of the season.

With Gordon on the court, Griffin was able to operate without immediate double- and triple-teams heading his way, which gave him more space in which to do his thing. It was the first time the rookie had scored at least 30 points in a game since-ironically-the last time these two teams met.

J.J. Hickson, who erupted for 27 points and 14 rebounds the last time these two teams met on February 11, led the Cavaliers with 28 points on 12-18 shooting.

Former Clipper Baron Davis sat out what would have been his first game against the team from which he was traded just before the deadline with a sore back. Ramon Sessions scored 18 points and dished out seven assists as Cleveland’s starting point guard.

Mo Williams, acquired along with Jamario Moon in exchange for Davis and a first-round pick, scored 11 points along with five assists in 27 minutes of action.

The difference in the game may have come at the three-point line, where the Clippers went 9-17 while Cleveland shot just 3-15.

Craig Smith provided a spark off-the-bench for L.A., scoring 12 points in just 21 minutes. It was the most he’d scored since December 18 against Chicago.

The Cavs will return to Cleveland to face the Orlando Magic on Monday, while the Clippers will host the Phoenix Suns Sunday afternoon at 12:30 PT.
