Andy Reid would be an excellent car salesman. The Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach has been building up the value of his backup quarterback to potential buyers during discussions with the media this week. There are reports that the Eagles have already received an offer that contains a first round draft pick as part of the deal. Reid came out and said that the team knows that they have a championship level QB in Kolb, so they will have to take that into consideration when looking at trade offers. It all sounds good, but I’m not buying. The Vikings are one of the teams reportedly interested in the Philly backup. I believe, for many reasons, it would be a mistake for Minnesota to trade for Kolb once the NFL CBA issues are resolved.
The Vikings definitely need some help at the quarterback position. Brett Favre is retired(don’t even think it!), Tarvaris Jackson was not offered a tender, and the remaining QB’s on the roster are sketchy to say the least. Joe Webb is probably the most promising, as nobody is ever going to get too excited about Patrick Ramsey or Rhett Bomar. Andy Reid is trying to sell Kevin Kolb as a solution to teams like the Vikings, but the problem is that this player isn’t an answer, he’s really just another question mark thrown into the equation. He actually hasn’t done anything to indicate he would be any better than Tarvaris and most fans have certainly grown weary of him. TJack has been in the league since 2006(2nd round draft pick), while Kolb came into the NFL in 2007(2nd round draft pick). Both have very similar numbers when it comes to some key statistics. These are career numbers: Jackson: Comp 58.7%, TDs 24, Int 22, YPC 11.3, QB Rating 76.6
Kolb: Comp 60.8%, TDs 11, Int 14, YPC 10.7, QB Raing 73.2
There is one big number I left out though. TJack is not under contract, but Kolb has a big one. The Eagles QB signed a $12 million contract extension last year and all of it is guaranteed. So Philly wants a 1st round pick, other draft picks, and a team willing to pick up a guaranteed contract for a player who hasn’t proven anything. Oh, Viking fans should also remember that this is the man who gave us Childress. No thanks Mr. Reid. If Minnesota wants to spend a 1st round pick on a QB, fine. There are several candidates available in the draft. I would much rather see Newton, Mallet, Gabbert, or Kaepernick on the back of a Vikings jersey next year. Then fans and Leslie Frazier would truly have a fresh star instead of somebodies used car.
