Bombers’ Arms Race a No-Brainer

The few questions Joe Girardi needed answered this spring are pretty much decided, particularly when it comes to his pitching staff. Everyone knew going in that Rivera would be the closer, CC is the ace, and Hughes and Burnett would follow. After that, well, the Yankees would have to see.
Rivera has been stellar (he’s allowed one hit in four innings and struck out five), and Sabathia (3.31 ERA)and Hughes (4.09 ERA) have been ok. Some might even say Burnett has been good, with a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings with 11 strikeouts.
The news is that Super Nova (Ivan) has been awesome, posting a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings, including a 59-pitch, six-inning no-hit start against Baltimore. He had to get the rest of his work in afterward in the bullpen. That’s pretty good.
Bartolo Colon seems to be having a career revival of his own, leading the staff with 17 Ks and posting a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings.
Sergio Mitre and Freddy Garcia are the only other two pitchers to see more than 10 innings of work this spring and both have posted bloated ERAs of 5.73 and 5.93, respectively.
The Yankees open the season on Thursday the 31st against the Tigers. Their rotation seems set, for now. It’s a long way to October, but if Nova and Colon can maintain what they started in Tampa, it’s hard to see anyone bumping them out of the rotation any time soon.
