MIAMI CONTINUES TO ROLL

This is something that would have seemed implausible a few months ago; the Miami Heat are flying below the radar as they continue to win games.  On Wednesday night they came back with a strong effort in the fourth quarter to beat the Pistons, 100-94 in Detroit.  The win was Miami’s third straight and gave them a 6-1 mark over their last seven games.  The Heat have seemingly put it all together as they continue to win games without huge outputs from either LeBron or DWade.  All of the “Big 3″ have been playing well, but the team has been prospering by playing well as a team.

The Heat currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference, 2.5 games back of Chicago and only 1.5 games behind Boston.  There has been plenty of talk about how important the #1 seed is, but it’s probably more important for Miami to just finish ahead of Boston.  The team’s problems with the Celtics are well chronicled and having home-court advantage over them in a playoff series would be huge.  In all likelihood, the Bulls will have to deal with Dwight Howard and Orlando in the second round.  That is a series that could go either way.  If the Heat continues to play as they have been, the #2 seed is well within reach.

As the NBA playoffs approach, the most important issue for Miami is health.  Mario Chalmers, who had definitely improved his game as of late, is out for two weeks with a sprained knee.  Of course, an even bigger question mark is Udonis Haslem, who has been out for most of the season, but is expected to return in time for the playoffs.  If UD can make any type of contribution, it would be really be welcome against a team like Boston in the second round.  Obviously, the continued health of Wade, James, and Chris Bosh is more important than anything else.  There is no guarantee of a championship this year, but there is definitely a vibe in South Florida that is similar to the Wade-Shaq years, when winning on the big stage was anticipated.
