The Uconn Huskies are on their way to this year’s Final Four, they battled Arizona to the buzzer and held on to win 65-63. Once the game started it looked as if the Huskies were over-matched, severely at that!! Arizona was up 9-1 at one point and Uconn didn’t have any field goals, then Derek Williams got in foul trouble and the Huskies went on a HUGE run to take the lead going into the half 32-25. Kemba Walker hit a huge step-back jumper to put Uconn up 65-60, Jemele Horne hit a 3 to make it 65-63, and from there it was a wild finish. Arizona inbounded the ball, Derek Williams attempted a 3 and the Wildcats got the board, then Jemele Horne missed his 3 point attempt before the buzzer went off. Arizona came out strong in the second half just like their game against Duke, they cut Uconn’s lead to 3 a couple of times and later down the line took the lead. Derek Williams was the difference for Arizona in the 2nd half, his presence opened up so much more of their offense. Williams had a decent game with 20 points and 5 rebounds, 14 of those points came in the second half. Kemba Walker’s impact on this game wasn’t the number of points he scored, but it was his decisions as a point guard. He really showed his mental aptitude for the position by calling good plays for his fellow teammates that resulted in baskets. Walker had 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists! His play-making ability for OTHERS was really on display tonight as Jeremy Lamb was the benefactor getting the ball in the right place off of screens. Lamb continues to blossom, he is really becoming a problem for opposing teams by how well he moves without the ball and hits the shot when he comes off of the screen! Lamb finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 HUGE steals. Lamb was Uconn’s offense during tough stretches in this game. It’s beautiful watching him run the baseline to get free, his ability to get buckets really makes Uconn tough to stop and maybe it will finally resonate in people’s minds that this is more than just Kemba Walker. Shabazz Napier had a GREAT game off the bench for the Huskies, Baz really stepped up tonight! Shabazz’s performance had him being called baby and mini-kemba on twitter!! Baz had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block!! He gave the Huskies 30 minutes of productive basketball on a big stage. Lastly I would like to give credit to Roscoe Smith, Alex Oriahki, and Charles Okwandu for the job they did on Wildcat star Derick Williams!! Those 3 contributions didn’t really show in the box score, but they didn’t get taken off the dribble once by Williams!! If you remember the Duke game, Williams was taking EVERYONE from Duke off the dribble in that game. I know Williams had 20 points, but he would’ve definitely had more if it wasn’t for their ability to guard him on the perimeter. Uconn got beat on the boards, but they won the turnover battle and blocked 6 shots to Arizona’s 1!! They held the Wildcats to 4 of 21 shooting from deep, Uconn did a great job defensively. They will take on the winner of the Kentucky-North Carolina game.
