In a week where Eugene Lockhart, former Cowboy linebacker, charged with mortgage fraud and DB Brian McCann charged with public intoxication, Dez Bryant has taken center stage being issued a criminal trespassing warning at Dallas’ North Park Mall. Bryant and some friends of his were asked by an off-duty police officer working security to pull up their sagging pants to which Bryant replied with profanity. Bryant was subsequently banned from the mall, though that has now be rescinded.
This should have been the lesser story of the 3, however, Bryant, who has had the spotlight on him since halfway through his last season at Oklahoma State, managed to help inflate the story along with the help of Deion Sanders. Sanders has essentially thrown in the towel after seeking to mentor Bryant as he was getting ready to come out of college as Sanders has done for other players in the past. This mall incident seems to have been the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak. As Sanders was upset for Bryant’s behavior after helping him secure an Under Armour deal in which Bryant signed an endorsement deal which stipulated that he wear Under Armour shoes. However, Bryant didn’t like the shoes and would not wear them, preferring Nike shoes instead. Of coarse Under Armour cut the deal, but Bryant had already spent the money and Prime Time was left looking silly for helping Bryant. This past week the two traded shots through the media.
The story will blow over, at least until the next Bryant incident, but did the Cowboys and their fans really expect anything less from Bryant who clearly had issues coming out of college? Not really. This kind of stuff should be expected, especially during slower news weeks in the NFL. He’s a 22 year old with a bank full of money and time to kill with no CBA and no team contact allowed. You can almost guarantee that this kind of thing will happen again and soon probably, whether it’s Dez Bryant or another player. As long as Bryant performs well on the field this incident will be long forgotten. At least until his next incident.
