PGA TOUR WHAT IT MEANS: Bay Hill — March 28, 2011

Another twenty-something winning starts this week’s What It Means:
Martin Laird Wins at Bay Hill: Laird fits the trend: another guy in his 20s from Europe winning on the PGA Tour. And this time he used a nifty European links-style bump and run shot to help put his round back on track. After struggling in the first portion of the round that included a water ball on 11, Laird used the useful shot out of the trees on 15 to get himself into position to make a birdie, followed by another on 16 and a sensational two-putt par to clinch victory on 18. It was Laird’s second PGA Tour victory, the first coming in 2009 in Las Vegas.
He now joins the growing class of young international studs on the PGA Tour. And now, with the first major just two weeks away, you can add his name to the list of contenders at Augusta.
Steve Marino Failing to Get His First PGA Tour Win: It’s hard. And you tend to make mistakes, like going bogey-par-double on 15-17 at Bay Hill on Sunday. But every try is a learning experience and Marino is way too talented to go much longer without a W.
Tiger and Phil Taking Trips to Augusta This Week: It must be close, then, if Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are making scouting trips up to Augusta National. It’s only two weeks away and if I’m being honest I think the tournament is wide open at the moment. We’ve had none of the big names win so far this year and a ton of first-timers and guys who haven’t won in a while actually win. Should be a great Masters.
