There is something in the Staples Centre..and its about to take off…! Its not a bird…its not a plane…its Blake “the Great” Griffin…!
I must say the first half of Saturday’s game was a little slow; Blake missed a couple of free throws and was unable to seal the deal on a few plays, but his delivery on the court was beast-like. You feel the boom…the bang and the jam with every one of Griffins plays. Athletically, he’s been likened to a jumping freak, an underlying engine with one gear — high.
The dunktastic Blake truly creates great buzz throughout the Staples Centre. At one point, I felt like I was at a New Kids on the Block concert. As soon as Blake Griffin and Mo Williams step on to the court, there was women throughout…yes, women of all ages going crazy, screaming, cheering, throwing their panties…OK, there was no panties thrown, but I am sure you get the gist of what I mean.
Blake has single-handedly begun to catapult the doleful Clippers to NBA relevance – he has put the team on the NBA map. His explosiveness leads me to ask the question- can Blake be an economic engine for Downtown LA? The Clippers are banking on it…! Although the Lakers are undoubtedly the bread and butter of South Park’s evening economy – Blake had the surrounding area bumping before and after the game on Saturday night outside the Staples Centre. He has definitely been the smiling face of Los Angeles’ “other” team – or what I would refer to as “The Blake-rs.” Not only was he the only rookie to make the All-Star Game last month, he won the fan adored dunk contest which has turned into a slow motion commercial promoting the car company as well as the league. Blakeonomics 101 – the increase in activity in the Staples Centre seems to be a direct refection based on what I call the “Blake Effect.” Indicative of the hype surrounding Griffin is, not only have the Clippers drawn larger crowds on the road but the attendees per home game has increased significantly since last year. I am pretty sure no one, except me — came out to see the bottom feeder Toronto Raptors play at the Staples Centre Saturday night.
After seeing the Clippers play live, it leaves me Blake-curious…wanting to see more of what “the Great” Griffin has up his sleeve; for the women attendees at the game up his sleeve is exactly what they want to be feeling…and more! Blake is a refreshing face to the city and organization, one they really need. He has successfully captivated diverse audiences in his rookie year and I am getting the vibe that its time for out with the old and in with the new in L.A.! So…be ready Kobe…there’s a new kid on the block…headed straight for Kobe Kingdom takeover!
