Halfway Point of EMU Spring Drills

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Uncle Mel drove the beat up white Chevy which is the offical mobile media vehicle into the parking lot of the big white bubble structure where the Eastern Michigan University spring drills are taking place under the direction and the all seeing eyes of football coach Ron English.

Uncle Mel looked at the revolving door and saw  two security officers at the door and making sure that nobody that is unauthorized slip into the inside under the bubble roof.

Not feeling defeated and after analyzing the situation Uncle Mel saw his opportunity to get inside and witness the football like activity being unfolded on the artificial playing surface – Uncle Mel went and open the front door of the practice facility and walked inside the building.

Weaving through the maze of a small hallway and walked out another door and into the open canyon of the field and looking over toward an open sideline Uncle Mel walked over and found a relatively out of the way spot to watch the Eastern Michigan University football team get ready for practice.

Suddenly and without a warning Uncle Mel looked down the sideline and saw English talking into a microphone, he is doing an interview-Uncle Mel took out his notepad and ink pen and made his way over to the spot were the interview was taking place.

English never seen Uncle Mel slip up into the conversation.

English said that he likes his team and he likes the way that the team is maturing and he is also happy that things are getting lot better around here and that his staff has an opportunity to teach football.

There are some issues with ball security with running backs and with the wide receivers the scrimmage snaps were physical and the Eagles offense did move the ball down the field.

Eastern Michigan University lost 10 fumbles last season and was tied in last place in the conference with Central Michigan University in turnover margin.

“The offense moved the football and they got hit quite a bit and that is why they fumbled the ball three times,” English said into the interview microphone and pointing toward the field. ”So I am pleased with both the offense and defense.”

Eastern Michigan University were second in the Mid-American Conference in rushing the football and English’s offense philosophy is that the Eagles will play a physical style of football which means the Eagles will run the ball.

An issue that the Eagles had last year and hope to correct for the fall campaign is to score touchdowns.

Eastern Michigan University scoring placed them in 11th place in the league by scoring only 31 touchdowns and five field goals a scoring average of 21.2 points in 12 games. Northern Illinois University scored 69 touchdowns and 42 of those came from rushing the ball to lead the conference.

“The issue offensively is we move the ball but we only scored twice,” English said. “We really shot ourselves in the foot because we had procedures and turnovers.”

Eastern Michigan University offensive line is developing into a solid foe for defensive lines according to English, they are large and physical when they arrive producing a massive line and it is fun to watch the running of the football because of the loud contact by the offensive linemen.

English said the major concern and issue during the spring drills is to have good workouts and it is important to remain healthy.

“I like the intensity and I like the team,” English said. “I like the culture in the locker room. We just need to finish strong!”

Eastern Michigan University spring drills will conclude with a spring game at the most friendliest football stadium in the Mid-American Conference and the home of the Eagles Rynearson Stadium the festivities is scheduled to begin with a 10 a.m. kickoff.

As the interview ended English looked around and smiled at Uncle Mel and then made a gesture with his arm and hand and a couple of burly like security guards to remove the media. Uncle Mel said good by to the coach and beat the escort to the revolving backdoor of the bubble dome practice facility promising English that Uncle Mel would return – guarantee that!
