Well, after looking like a college team for four games, the Bobcats (31-42) came roaring back and have now won three straight games to pull back within one game of the Pacers (33-42) for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East. And it’s not like they beat cupcakes either. The Bobcats were able to pull off wins at Boston (51-22) and at home against New York (36-38) and Milwaukee (29-44). And while the Milwaukee win doesn’t seem very impressive, it is when you consider that Milwaukee is still in a fight for the 8th playoff spot as well. I know I wrote them off last week, but if Charlotte continues to play motivated like they did over the weekend, then they have a decent shot to catch Indiana. Charlotte plays Cleveland (14-58) twice, Washington (18-55), New Jersey (23-49) and Detroit (26-47) over their last nine games. All of those should be wins, and if they can pull off one win among their other four games against Orlando (47-27 and play them twice), Miami (51-22) and Atlanta (42-32) and win all of the games they will be favored in, then I think they will make it into the playoffs.
The best part about the weekend? Different players stepped up in each game. Against Boston, D.J. White, who came to Charlotte in the Nazr Mohammed trade, came up huge throughout the game and ended up with 17 points and 6 rebounds in only 24 minutes of play. He hit big buckets throughout to keep Charlotte close. However, after that great game, he disappeared in the other two. It was Boris Diaw who stepped up against New York, putting in 20 points to go with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. He was just solid throughout, getting to the bucket and hitting his mid-range jumper. After that horrible game against Indiana last week, it was a nice turnaround for him. And finally, the combination of Gerald Henderson and Stephen Jackson was key in the win against Milwaukee. Jackson was solid throughout with 18 points, consistently putting pressure on the Bucks’ defense. But it was Henderson who closed the game like MJ would have. With the Bobcats down 86-80 with only 2:30 left in the game, Henderson just took over. He scored the last 7 points of the game with a variety of lay-ups and jumpers and helped Charlotte come out on top 87-86. It was just incredible to see. Hopefully he can continue to improve over the last nine games and continue developing into a starting SG in this league.
There was one disappointment over the weekend though. D.J. Augustin continues to struggle with his shot. He went a combined 13-41 in the three wins and was really struggling to get his shot off consistently. He needs to pick his play up for Charlotte to have a good chance of sneaking into the playoffs. But overall it was still a successful weekend. It should be a fun last nine games to see if they can pass Indiana.
