O’s Outlook: Outfield and DH

Posted By Sven Jenkins On Mar 30 2011 @ 3:13 pm In Baltimore Orioles | No Comments

While the O’s infield will take on a whole new look this summer [1], familiar faces will dot the outfield in Baltimore. This group is a good mix of veterans and developing youngsters.

The Starters

LF Luke Scott [2]
CF Adam Jones [3]
RF Nick Markakis [4]

Luke Scott is moving to a full-time outfield position for the first time since 2008. Scott can pound the baseball but many believe he will struggle defensively in LF, despite the fact he posted positive defensive metrics as a full-time outfielder in ’07 and ’08.

Adam Jones is straight out of the Mike Cameron [5] body-type and it looks like he is becoming a similar player. They both have good speed and power, but whiff too much and struggle to get on base.

The consistent Nick Markakis returns to right field, where he looks to improve on a down 2010 season. Nick’s counting stats were down significantly, which I’m guessing was more due to the poor O’s offense than his own regression. I’m calling career year in 2011.

The Backups

[6]

Pie and Scott

Felix Pie [7] LF / CF / RF
Jake Fox [8] RF / LF
Nolan Reimold [9] LF

Pie won a roster spot as the fourth outfielder, mostly because of his lack of minor league options than his bat. Pie will never be much of a hitter [10], but he plays plus outfield with an excellent arm.

Jake Fox has been mentioned in all my posts I think. We’ll see if he’s in my pitching preview as well. Fox could see some time in RF or LF as he continues to make himself into the ultimate utility slugger this spring.

Reimold has been optioned to AAA to begin the season, despite his excellent spring line of .315 / .448 / .537. Reimold still had minor league options remaining and that was about the extent of it. His defense is average at best, but he could prove to have plus major league power.

Designated Hitter

[11]

Vladimir Guerrero

Vladimir Guerrero [12] DH / RF

After weeks of speculation [13], Guerrero was finally brought in to take over as the full-time DH. Vlad put together an impressive bounce-back season in 2010, raking 29 home runs and driving in 115 with Texas. Hopefully, for the Orioles, that wasn’t his last great season.
