Today is Opening Day and for the Astros, the season starts Tomorrow at noon in Philly.
In the words of Bart Scott “can’t wait”.
The Astros have already been hit with a big loss with Jason Castro tearing his ACL. Quintero will see most of the action behind the plate this year. Youngster Brett Wallace is opening day starter at First. I’m not sure he’s the best option. I’d like to see Carlos Lee get more games at First Base maybe a total position change to First. Angel Sanchez starts at Shortstop. Angel has a solid glove but don’t count on much coming from his bat (2010: .277 0hr).
Bill Hall is the new guy at second. An ok glove with good power at the plate but he’s a little old.
Now, Chris Johnson at third is who I’m thinking is going to have a big year. Good glove ,good power look for him to give the pitchers some run support.
Same cast in the Outfield. Big bat in left with Lee (2010: .249 24hr) who can be a tad slow in the outfield. Hunter Pence needs to have a big year for this team to win some games. Hunter has the perfect mix of speed, power (2010: .282 25hr and 18sb) and defense to be an outstanding player. Then there’s Michael Bourn, the fastest man in the league. I’m looking for him to bring his batting average up from the .265 he hit last year and if he does get on base more, his steals will go up which will give the Astros more scoring chances.
That was the problem last year. No run support. How many games did the Astros lose because they couldn’t score runs? I don’t know cause I din’t want to keep count.
As for the Pitching staff. The Astros have a under the radar type starting rotation. Stop yelling at me and hear me out. Brett Myers Last season set the record for most consecutive quality starts with an ERA of 3.14 and 180 Ks. Score some runs for him and his record will be a lot better than 14-8. Wandy pitched well at times last season but needs top avoid big innings. Wandy is still a solid lefty. Happ is another good lefty that should get some wins. Bud Norris is the guy who could have a very good year. If Bud brings his ERA down and gets some more Ks, he has the stuff to win 15 to 17 games. Figueroa will be the number 5 starter for now. He just needs to give the Astros solid innings. The Bullpen is OK, it could be better but none of it matters if they don’t score runs.
It doesn’t help that the Astros have start with the Philly’s and the best pitching staff in baseball but you never know. Every team has a chance to win the World Series at the beginning of the year. They could beat up Halladay or he could throw a know hitter, you never know.
It’s gonna be a long season. I think it will be pretty good. GO ASTROS.
