Opening Day: The 2nd Biggest Story in the Bronx

With apologies to the cobra who is on the lam, we’ll focus on the Yankees’ season opener against the Tigers in the 10451. What surprises will this series hold, other than the weather? Probably nothing too earth-shattering.

The Bombers send CC to the mound to face Justin Verlander this afternoon. Anyone going to the game should wear layers as a wintry mix of weather is in store. Absent this year is a championship banner raising. This is a serious void for Yankees fans who come to expect it, but alas, all New York can do is win number 28 for next year.

Jeter is back (not a surprise) and looking for his 3,000th hit.  Truly remarkable when you think about it, and something to be addressed a bit later in the year. Jeter will share lead-off responsibilities with Gardner, batting first against lefties and second against righties. A-Rod looked great in spring training, so the two “old guys” on the left side of the infield may just drive this offense early in 2011.

Going into the season the starting rotation was a huge question mark. Ivan Nova secured his spot and Freddy Garcia was picked over Bartolo Colon for number 5, but I still put my money on Colon getting a few starts this year.

Eyes will be on Russell Martin behind the plate. Posada will continue to DH and I’m sure assist with managing the staff. Jorge has a lot of baseball knowledge behind him.

It’s a long season, as everyone knows, and the Yankees don’t tend to bring the heat until after the All-Star Break, so if New York can keep healthy, I suspect they will be in good shape even if they lose a few in (March), April and May.

My picks for the year: AL East: New York, AL Central: Chicago, AL West: Texas, Wildcard: Boston – AL CHAMPS: New York

NL East: Philly, NL Central: St. Louis, NL West: San Francisco Wildcard: LA – NL CHAMPS: San Francisco

World Series Winners: New York in 7

Now – Let’s PLAY BALL!
