Duke recruits excel at McD’s All American Game

To get a glimpse into next season for the Blue Devils, all one had to do is check out the action at the McDonald’s All American Game in Chicago this past week.  Quinn Cook, a 6-0 guard from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, finished second in the three-point shooting contest to Kyle Wiltjer, a 6-10 forward going to Kentucky next season.  Then, in the dunk contest, Marshall Plumlee, a 6-10 forward from Christ School in Arden, N.C., came in second to LeBryan Nash, a 6-7 forward headed to Oklahoma State.  Plumlee had two outstanding dunks and should probably have won.

The highlight of the dunk contest came from Austin Rivers, the National H.S. Player of the Year out of Winter Park in Orlando, who paid tribute to his famous father, Boston Celtics’ coach and 1980 McDonald’s All-American Doc Rivers, by donning a replica No. 25 Atlanta Hawks jersey before his first dunk.  Rivers pulled off some pretty impressive dunks and showcased a higher vertical leap than many people knew about in completing two crowd pleasing dunks.  One was a windmill off a high toss coming from out of bounds on the left baseline, and the other was originally supposed to be a toss from the stands by Myck Kabongo, a 6-1 guard who is also represents Canada and who played his HS ball just outside of Las Vegas at Findlay Prep, but they couldn’t get the timing right.  Rivers just finished with a nifty windmill off the lob which still drew a lot of cheers from the crowd.

In the McDonald’s All American Game, the three Duke signees exhibited some impressive play that will have the Cameron Crazies excited about their skill set.

Cook helped lead the East squad to a 111-96 victory. He scored 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

Plumlee was also on the East team and finished with five points, eight rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal. The younger brother of current Duke players Miles and Mason Plumlee was 2-of-3 from the field.

Rivers led the West team in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four assists. He made three of the West team’s four three-point field goals in the game.

The three McDonalds All-Americans give Duke 55 all-time. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has recruited 53 of the 55 in school history. It is the eighth time there have been three or more future Blue Devils in the game, including four of the last seven years.
