BOWLING GREEN, Ohio —- Eastern Michigan University baseball team proved to be a rude guest at the breeziest baseball field in the Mid-American Conference and the home of the Bowling Green State University Falcons also known as Warren Steller Field, Friday afternoon April 1, 2011.
Eastern Michigan University offense scattered 19 hits and scored just enough runs to escaped Friday’s conference home opener for the Falcons with a 13-11 victory against Bowling Green State University.
“We just did not play smart,” Bowling Green State University baseball coach Danny Schmitz said after the game. “I give Eastern a lot of credit they out played us in what we call the three phases the pitching, the hitting and the defense and they did really a great job especially early in the game. We made some mistakes.”
Schmitz describes his team as still being a young team especially in the outfield, he did not understand the lack of communication on the field that failed to produce production, he is also expecting some leadership from some of his veterans on the team.
“We did not make plays that we needed to make,” Schmitz said. “We need to learn from those mistakes and eliminate those mistakes and hopefully have better results.”
Alexander is happy with the execution of the Eagles offense and he says the success of the Eagles is because of the quality pitching that they saw early in the season.
“Knowing that nobody can beat you and playing those teams early they had guys throwing at 95 and 93 and we hit those guys,” Alexander said. “A good early start really helps out.”
“We have been swinging the bats pretty well and defiantly making us feel well,” Alexander said describing the Eagles at the plate. “We have a lot of confidence at the plate and hope it continues.”
The Eagles offense led by catcher Matt Hitt and his four hits that included three doubles and knocking in six runs. Helping the offense Eagle’s firstbase man Lee Longo, he contributed three hits and two RBIs for the Eagles.
Alexander started Rob Wendzicki against the Falcons and he pitched five and one-third of an inning, he struck out four but he also gave up two solo home runs in the fourth inning but he did get his second victory.
Alexander said Wendzicki’s effort wad appreciated today and that he did exactly what we wanted on the mound.
“Very good he gives us six quality innings usually and most of the time just enough for us to win,” Alexander said. “Thank God we got him a win this time.”
Eastern Michigan University bullpen almost let the game slip through their hands as they gave up six runs to the Falcons in the bottom of the ninth but relief ace Joe Battistelli came to the rescue of the Eagles and recorded the final two outs to preserve the game for the Eagles.
“We took a lot for granted and in the ninth inning they got a lot of seeing-eye hits and really there is nothing that we can do about that,” Alexander said about the bullpen’s performance. “(Kyle) Peterson was throwing 91 and 92 and he is pumping them in there maybe too much we had the lead and he did not want to walk guys. Our bullpen has been or best until today.”
Alexander is expecting his ball club to play with confidence and he expects his veterans and the new pieces that have been added to the roster to play hard and to give maximum effort every time they take the diamond.
The weekend series continues Saturday afternoon April 2, 2011 and the Eagles will try and continue to be a rude guest at Warren Steller Field, the first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Congratulations are in order for sophomore outfielder and designated hitter Daniel Russell for being named the Player of the Week in the Mid-American Conference for the week of March 27, 2011. This is the second time this season he has won the honor.
He led the Eagles to a 4-1 record which included the Eagles sweeping the University at Buffalo. He is batting a head turning .357 and 24 RBIs before he took the field against Bowling Green State University.
The road trip to Bowling Green State University April1-3, 2011 will begin an eight game road swing through their schedule. There will be stops in East Lansing to play Michigan State University and a date in Cleveland to face the Vikings of Cleveland State University.
Sandwich in between is a weekend conference series against the favorite to win the Mid-American Conference Championship the Kent State University Golden Flashes.
