Pens Beat Florida 4-2, Reach 100 Points

Pittsburgh hit the 100 point mark for the seventh time in franchise history on Saturday night.

The Panthers took a first period lead with two goals :22 second apart.   After those two goals were scored every Pens fan in the country thought to themselves; “here we go again”.  The first period also featured Tyler Kennedy’s 20th goal of the season.  Really, Tyler Kennedy has scored 20 goals this season.  I was first in line to talk down about Kennedy and his lack of consistency as a winger, but after Dan Bylsma had a talk with him during a skate he has been lights out. Kennedy is dangerous in the high slot with the puck, he hits the net, and for some reason goaltenders sink in the crease and give him daylight.

With a quick goal o start the second period, Dupuis banged one in a wide open net.  Dupuis is not the person I like to see in front of an open net, his hands are made of concrete, and it is just scary.  Jordan Staal was being the “pterodactyl” that we all know and love.  He was everywhere, and was the nights number one star, finishing with three assists.

Zbynek Michalek went 92 games without a goal, then recently he has become a sniper.  Z got the puck at the point, from way downtown… count it, his 4th of the year.  Craig Adams saw an open net in the third, boomshakalaka.  Game.  Adams gets his first goal with a mohawk.

Brent Johnson was in net for the Pens, and other than the second goal, he had another solid game.  He has been a great back up for Fleury all season long.  He was extraordinary during Fleury’s rough start, and means a ton to this team in the locker room.

This game was important for several reasons.  One, it kept the 3 point lead over Tampa Bay for home ice.  Two, Jordan Staal recorded his 100th NHL Assist, and the Pens need a hot Staal going into the playoffs.  Three, it was the debut of ROOT Sports, the new name for the network formerly known as FSN-Pittsburgh.
