A star’s return to form started this week’s What It Means:
Phil Mickelson Wins Again: Phil’s victory at the Shell Houston is huge. Mickelson wasn’t playing well at all to start 2011, not contending in any of his previous starts. Suddenly, he turned it up on Saturday, shooting 63, and backing it up with a strong round on Sunday to clinch his 39th career victory. This is as sharp as I’ve seen Phil’s game since he won The Players the week the marriage with Butch Harmon.
This was his first victory since last year’s Masters, and should put him in prime shape for the tournament he loves the most. Watch out everyone else!
A Sunny, Warm Weather Forecast for Augusta: Golf fans should want a warm, sunny forecast. It brings everyone — short hitters, long hitters, etc — into the realm of possibility. It leads to lot of birdies, eagles, and overall excitement. Hope that forecast holds. If it does, it should be a great week.
My Picks: I think Tiger is going to do really well this week. I really do. Young players don’t do well at Augusta. They just don’t. It takes, for most, years and years of trying to breakthrough. I look for Tiger, Phil and Ernie Els in the running on Sunday with Tiger winning.
It’s out there, but it could happen. We’ll see next week.
