Things just have not gone right for the Stars down the stretch and it very likely could cost them a playoff spot. They squandered vital games against teams they needed to beat over the past few weeks: two late game tying goals and then extra time losses both to Anaheim, losses to Phoenix, Nashville, and Los Angeles, and getting thrashed 6-0 in San Jose the other night.
The Stars could have controled their own destiny as they did have games in hand on Chicago and Nashville and were ahead of the Preds as well as the Ducks but now have let those games and points slip away and they find themselves behind the eight ball. They no longer control their own destiny thanks to not being able to string together any wins since their big 5-0 pounding of Chicago back on March 17th. After that game the Stars looked to be in decent shape, especially considering the way they played. It’s been a slippery slope ever since.
They now have just five games left and sit five back of 8th place Chicago. There’s still hope, but when you give up all your control and depend on another team to completely tank it, while you yourself cannot seem to pull out any wins, things just don’t seem to be heading in your direction.
After tonight’s game in Anaheim, it does get a little easier for the Stars. They have two remaining home games against Columbus on Tuesday and Colorado on Thursday. Then go on to finish the regular season in Colorado on Friday and in Minnesota on Sunday. All win-able games, but will it matter by then ? That’s exactly what the Stars have managed to squander.
