Angels get Royal butt kicking

After a nice first game that saw Torii Hunter hit one of the longest homeruns ever hit in Kaufmann Stadium, the Angels dropped 3 straight to the Kansas City Royals. These are the same Royals that are 175/1 to win the 2011 World Series. It way too early to worry about anything, but this is the last way the Halos wanted to start the season.

Offensively, the Angels looked decent, averaging just over 4 runs in 4 games. Unfortunately, Kansas City was just better, averaging over 5 runs. The Angels couldn’t put them away in any of the final 3 games, even though they had a lead in each one. The starters, minus Scott Kazmir, looked good, but the bullpen was horrible. I want to point fingers, but i ran out of digits. After April of last year, I couldn’t stand Fernando Rodney, and I still can’t. The guy is a set-up man, nothing more. Even the one’s he does save, it’s always an adventure. But who do you replace him with? Kevin Jepson isn’t much better. I love his, “I am stupid” comments, but it falls on deaf ears when you screw up almost every night. Welcome to Anaheim Hisanori Takahoshi. I thought he’d be an upgrade, but other than a called third strike to a pitch watching Alex Gordon, he’s looked less than mediocre. Michael Kahn. Could he groove a pitch any better than the one he gave to Kila Ka’aihue? And than there’s Jason Bulger, another guy who has no business being in the majors. In 9 out of 10 appearances, he flat out sucks. He’s what people call a 4A pitcher. Not good enough for the Majors, but too good for triple A.  Great job walking 4 batters today. You know, all spring I hear players say that spring training is too long, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for the Halos bullpen. Maybe they needed another two weeks. I do want to give kudos to Jordan Walden, who looked lights out. However, he could have done just about anything to look good standing next to this weekends stiffs.

The Angels offense looked good. Howard Kendrick looks like a guy that could challenge for a batting title. They’ve been saying that for years, I might as well jump on the bandwagon. Maicer Izturis and Bobby Abreu are getting their bats untracked, and you know Vernon Wells and Hunter will soon follow. I would love to rip on Jeff Mathis, but I will wait until the end of April.

I will finish with Scott Kazmir. I am finished with him, but the Angels aren’t. Maybe the Rays knew something when they pawned him off on the Angels a couple years back.  I believe he is making 12 million this year, is this really the best he can do? I saw him at the end of spring training give up 8 runs  in 2 innings to a watered down Milwaukee Brewer team. He appears to be injured, because no one healthy can be that ineffective, can they?

Off to Tampa Bay for the Halos. It’s only 4 games so far, but right now I don’t like what I see. But you never know, I may be singing the praises of these guys in two months. I sure hope so.
