Shirts Off Our Backs, Pens Win

Tonight is Fan appreciation night in Pittsburgh. Each year fans at the last home game of the season have a chance to win a sweaty, game worn jersey right off of the back of their favorite players. The whole night is a celebration, and the celebration is much better when the Penguins can pull off a win. Tonight, it will be a great celebration, as the Pens pulled together and beat the rival devils.
The first period looked like it was going to be another boring game against the Devils. After some neutral zone play, and a great penalty kill, the Pens were awarded a power play. When the Penguins get a power play these days I usually just hope it doesn’t look too embarrassing. Alexei Kovalev sends a pass towards James Neal, who one touches it to a breaking Jordan Staal. Staal uses a power move and chips it over Hedburg, who went for a sprawling poke check. 1-0.
Staal has been huge. He played 29 minutes in a game recently. That is unreal. Staal has been showing he is big time recently.
In the second period Steckel gets NJ on the board, 1-1. The Pens answer quickly, as Dupuis slams a rebound in. The rebound came from an incredibly week shot by Max Talbot. It was just a bad goal to give up.
In the third Kunitz puts the Pens up by two after putting home a Tyler Kennedy rebound. Kunitz gets a goal after him and his wife welcomed Payton Marie Kunitz to the world earlier. Congratulations to the Kunitz family, he has been good at having children around playoff time in his career.
Rolston brings the Devils closer with a late goal. The Pens were short handed late when Kovalchuk makes a lazy play with an empty net behind him. Dupuis from down town. Game.
The Pens won 4-2 and climbed a little closer to the Flyers in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa were all over the Flyers to help the Pens close in on them. Pittsburgh still has a chance at a #1 seed. Pretty incredible considering all the injuries the Pens have faced this year. Dan Bylsma has to be in talks for the Jack Adams trophy.
