Diamondbacks Ready for Home Opener

The Diamondbacks (2-3) salvaged the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs with a 6-4 win at Wrigley Field.
The offense showed signs of life by collecting 12 hits including a double and triple by outfielder, Chris Young. Miguel Montero hit his second home run of the season in the eighth inning off LHP John Grabow. The catcher is hitting a robust .474 to begin the campaign.
Willie Bloomquist continued his torrid pace in the series including a lead off home run in Monday’s game against RHP Randy Wells accounting for the Diamondbacks only scoring. The infielder has filled in admirably (.348 average) for the injured Stephen Drew.
Justin Upton continued his early season struggles going 1-12 in the series and his batting average stands at .182 over his first 22 at-bats. The 23 year-old right-fielder will try and improve his fortune during the upcoming nine-game home stand.
Meanwhile, the starting pitching has been a surprising strength for the ball club during the first five games of the 2011 season.
Joe Saunders (0-1) pitched 6 effective innings on Monday producing the pitching line of 6IP/ 5H/ 2ER/ 3BB/ 3K. Unfortunately, the left-hander needed to hurl a shutout on this day to capture a victory. Saunders appears ready to rebound from a disappointing 2010 season after leading MLB with 17 losses.
Barry Enright threw 100 pitches over 6 innings during Tuesday’s contest. The right-hander struggled at times with his command allowing 7H/ 4ER/ 3BB. However, he was effective enough to keep the Diamondbacks in the game long enough to stage a 3-run, 7th inning rally to tie the game 4-4.
Armando Galarraga (1-0) made his first career NL start and Diamondbacks debut on Wednesday afternoon. The right-hander hurled 7+ IP/ 5H/ 4ER/ 2BB/ 5K and did not allow hit until Marlon Byrd singled to lead off the fourth inning. His pitching line does not represent the quality of his outing.
INF Willie Bloomquist stole his fifth base of the season on Wednesday. The ASU alumnus swiped only 8 bases last season splitting time with Kansas City and Cincinnati.
Arizona ended its eight-game losing skid versus the Cubs.
The Diamondbacks play their home opener Friday night against the 2010 NL Central Champion Cincinnati Reds at Chase Field. Ian Kennedy is scheduled to make his second start of the season for Arizona.
