Ypsilanti, Mich. — As the rain continued to fall from the gray sky, Uncle Mel stood outside the friendliest basketball arena and the home of the Eastern Michigan University basketball teams – the Convocation Center, when the roar of the big yellow moving truck arrived and stopped at the curb and three burley moving professionals rushed through the doors and up the stairs to basketball office.
After six seasons and with an overall coaching record of 36.5 percent Eastern Michigan University basketball coach Charles Ramsey was released from his duties and contract obligation effective immediately.
“After through and extensive review, I have determined that that it is in the best interests of the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball program to change direction,” Eastern Michigan University Athletic Director Dr.Derrick Gragg said today after his decision. “Charles Ramsey has worked hard and had some accomplishments along the way, particularly in the academic success rate of our student athletes. He has many strong qualities and we wish him success in the future.”
The Eagles direction under Ramsey kept heading into the depth of hell and spinning out of control, there just did not look like a chance for the Eagles under Ramsey to stop the chaos.
The new basketball coach will have a program searching for answers and also trying to get some kind of talent.
There are bright spots, Derek Thompson a swing man who averaged 9.4 points per game and at the point running the show for the Eagles will be Darrell Lampley and just 6.3 points per game but his ability to run the offense will need to improve along with his ability to affectively score.
The defense will be in the good hands with power forward and center Jamell Harris with just a poultry 4.6 points and ranked second in the Mid-American Conference with 72 blocks.
Ramsey offense ranked 10th in the conference scoring just a average of 61.5 points and were last place at the free throw line only making .624 percent.
Ramsey said his team worked every day practicing free throws and worked hard during practice but the numbers can not hide the ineffectiveness of the offense.
The field goal percentage of .389 which placed the Eagles at the 11th spot of the 12 team league.
“There is no question that we look forward, we do so with a focus on maintaining the proud tradition of EMU athletics and restoring our men’s basketball program to the level of success achieved during the mid-1990 with our 1990-91 MAC Championship and the NCAA Sweet 16 title run our NCAA appearance and win over Duke,” Gragg said. “Our outstanding facilities and strong support of student athlete provide an excellent foundation as we begin our search for a new coach.”
Ramsey will be paid the rest of his contract a cool $176,416 that remained on his contract.
There were too many rainy days for the Eagles under the direction of Ramsey and now the task of finding another basketball coach will be a stormy trip for Gragg but many Eagle fans are willing to brave the tempest.
