Evil Empire Invades Weakend ‘Nation’

You almost feel sorry for them – those die-hard Sox fans who were intent on recapturing post-season glory. All the smack talk during the off-season about how they were going to ride pitching excellence all the way until October. And here they sit at 0-6, off to their worst start since 1945. Sigh…

Meanwhile, back at the Death Star in the 10451, the Yankees have played well enough to get off to a 4-2 start. The undefeated ORIOLES, however, sit atop the AL East – way to go Buck and Co. Seriously. Shockingly AJ Burnett accounts for half of the Yankees’ wins.  Other surprises – Phil Hughes is struggling with his velocity and Joba has been solid in the set-up role with a 2.25 ERA and a win to his credit. This is exactly what I thought would happen *last year* when in fact 2010 turned out to be the opposite of what I predicted these two.

Girardi was trying a three-headed monster of Joba-Soriano-Rivera out of the bullpen and that seemed to be working well until Tuesday when the middle member of the troika blew CC’s four-run lead. Soriano stormed out without talking to the media, compounding one big mistake with a HUGE ONE. He apologized the next day, but the sure path to NY professional athlete suicide is not to talk to the media when you screw up, ESPECIALLY if you’re new. He should have greeted the NY press at the clubhouse door and started spilling his guts in the post-game. The silent treatment gets you demoted or traded.

In the “not really news” category – Mo has four saves to his credit and has yet to give up an earned run. Make that *any* runs. CC has a 1.38 ERA in two starts, but no wins to his credit (yet). Nova won his first start of the year.

Because of Thursday’s rainout, Freddy Garcia was skipped in the rotation so we have to wait until next week to see what he’s got. I still stand by Colon as the better pick for the rotation, despite his ERA of 9.00 -JEEZ, Bartolo, help a girl out! – but if Hughes falters, Girardi may throw him in there today. He’s had plenty of experience pitching against Boston, that’s for sure.

Offensively the Yankees are doing ok. Mark Teixeira leads the team with 10 RBI and four homers.
