Flyers Announce Awards

[1]Maybe it is too early to begin discussing end of season hardware bearing the name of Lord Stanley, but on the verge of the NHL postseason it is time to distribute Flyers organizational trophies. The Stanley Cup and NHL trophies will come in about two months’ time. Ergo 2010-2011 Regular Season Flyers Awards have been voted on by the players, coaches and selected members of the media. Neither myself nor Jason Bartle (PSB Flyers beat reporter) were included in the voting this year but I have no contention with the results, which follow:

[2] [3]BOBBY CLARKE TROPHY (MVP): Claude Giroux
The team’s most valuable player award goes to Claude Giroux who leads the team entering Saturday’s finale with a team-high 76 points. He has 25 goals to go along with a team-high 51 assists and most impressive is that Giroux has played in every game this season. Giroux made the All-Star game as a write-in candidate and earned a goal and an assist in the game.

[4] [5]BARRY ASHBEE TROPHY (Best Defenseman): Andrej Meszaros
In the absence of Chris Pronger, someone had to step up to lead the defense and Meszaros proved he was up to the challenge. The versatile blueliner started the season on the team’s third combination but played solidly in all situations, turning in 6 goals (highest total of all Flyers’ defensemen), 22 assists and has a team-high plus-28 ranking.

[6] [7]PELLE LINDBERGH MEMORIAL TROPHY (Most Improved): Andreas Nodl
The team voted on this award for the most-improved player. Nodl has played 66 games in orange and black, heading into the season finale sporting 11 goals and 11 assists. He’s been all over the Flyers lineup from the top line with Mike Richards, to the fourth line with Darroll Powe and Dan Carcillo. Last season he played in only 10 games and got one assist.

Obviously, this award speaks for itself; given to a player for being a nice guy. Boucher, now a 12-season veteran, is always willing to talk to the media, on the best and worst nights regardless of his performance. He’s also the guy smiling in the locker room most often, offering guidance and advice to younger players and generally acting as a coach both on and off the ice. Constantly joking with his teammates and whoever is around, Boucher also embodies the notion of sportsmanship and teamwork.

[9]BILL MASTERSON TROPHY NOMINEE:                   Ian Laperriere
Despite not playing a single game this season, Ian Laperriere is the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association nominee for the NHL’s player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” You don’t need skates to do that!

Now it is onto the Stanley Cup Playoffs where literally ANYTHING is possible! Will it be another 3-0 series comeback? Will it be another finals appearance or will they come out with a Cup raised high? Bring on Buffalo!
