YPSILANTI, Mich. —– Well sometimes there is nothing wrong with old-school style.
Saturday afternoon at Kent State University defeated Eastern Michigan University by the score of 1-0 in an old fashion pitcher duel.
Starting for the Eagles Corey Chaffins worked seven and two-thirds of an innings only giving up one run and seven hits but he was out dueled by the Golden Flashes starting pitcher Kyle Hallock.
“He is the guy all of our players look up to,” Kent State University baseball coach Scott Strickland said about Hallock’s performance after the game. “He leads by example. It is no surprise for me to see him succeed like this!”
Hallock struck out four batters while only giving up one walk and five hits in seven innings of work before putting the game into the hands of closer Justin Gill who came in threw two perfect innings to record his second save of the season.
“I am glad we came out on top,” Hallock said. “I knew it was going to be one of those tight ballgames. When you see the other guy throwing up zero, you want to do the same.”
Both pitchers started a little shaky and in the early innings both pitchers battled through the rough spots and both settled down and found the rhythm and control of the pitches they needed to keep the bats quite.
Kent State scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning when Golden Flashes second baseman Derek Toadvine crossed the plate on a ground ball hit by Travis Shaw but Chaffins ended the threat when he got Dave Lyon to hit a weak ground ball back to the mound.
Eastern Michigan University had just a few scoring opportunities and even a chance to break open the game in the first two innings.
In the first inning Eagle left fielder Ken Battiston led off the inning with a single into left field and stole second and third base but Hallock gained his composer and proceeded to strike out the side ending the threat.
The second inning with one out Eagle shortstop Tucker Rubino walked and third baseman Ben Magsig hit a single into right field, Rubino tried to take the extra base and was gunned down at third base when Golden Flash right fielder Ben Klafczynski came up with the ball clean and threw a strike to third baseman Shaw who put the tag on Rubino.
Chaffins threw a total of 117 pitches and struck out four but walked three before Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander went to the bull pen and finished the game with Tim Combs.
Battiston led the offense for the Eagles with two hits including the only extra base hit by an Eagle.
In front of the largest crowd at Olga A Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium, Kent State University took the series and on Sunday afternoon the Golden Flash will be looking to take the broom out and sweep the weekend series.
Sunday’s game is scheduled to begin a noon; the Eagles will start Steve Webber and taking the mound for the Golden Flash will be lefty David Starn.
