Just two days after their season ended horribly in Minnesota, the Dallas Stars have relieved Marc Crawford of his head coaching duties. Crawford has been the head coach of the Stars the past two seasons after replacing Dave Tippett at the helm.  Crawford was hired during the summer of 2009 to bring an offensive style to the Stars but has failed to make the playoffs now in both of his years at the helm.

In my own opinion, Dave Tippett was and is a better coach. That’s not to say that the Stars would have been a much better team the past couple seasons had he been in the driver seat. That’s impossible for anyone to say. But he is a better coach. It was a downgrade to bring in Crawford any which way you look at it.

As for possible replacements, I pegged Willie Desjardins as his possible replacement when he was brought in last summer. He took the Ken Hitchcock route having success in the junior rankings before being brought up to the pros and is definitely a possibility. I myself would also look at Canadiens assistant and former Star Kirk Muller, who’s about ready for a crack at a head coaching position somewhere. As well as former Stars Guy Carbonneau. But those are just my thoughts.

Word is that Joe Nieuwendyk is in no rush to decide his replacement so whether he has anyone even in mind, only he knows. It’s likely that he at least waits until the playoffs are over to decide  in case any coaches currently in the playoffs are let go and become available. It would only give him more options to choose from. But if he is considering Desjardins, it’s likely nothing new and it may not take that long to name him as the new head coach. But only Joe knows and in reality, there really is no huge rush.

At least it didn’t take long for the off season excitement to start.
