In the same old, same old category: The Yankees crushed the Orioles’ dreams of 2011 domination and knocked them out of first place in a two-game (rain-shortened) set. New York takes on Texas in a three-game series this weekend in an ALCS rematch against the leaders in the AL West.
The Rangers are without Cliff Lee who fled for the Phillies and Josh Hamilton who broke his arm with a head-first slide. The Yankees don’t have Pettitte but a lot of the other faces are the same.
Ivan Nova (1-0, 6.10) squares off against lefty Matt Harrison (2-0, 1.29) to open the series. Opponents are batting just .143 off him. Against the Yankees he’s 1-1 with a 7.53 ERA in two starts and three relief appearances.
Lefty Derek Holland (2-0, 2.25) faces winless Freddy Garcia and his 9.00 ERA.
Look for the “lefty starter lineup shift” with Jeter hitting off etc.
The Yankees finally face a righty on Sunday when Alexi Ogando (2-0, 0.00) takes on CC Sabathia (0-1, 1.45). Ogando has not allowed a run in 13 innings in his first two major league starts.
The weekend should be a knock-down, drag-em out fight. The Yankees want payback for last year and the Rangers want the world to know that Cliff Lee wasn’t the only sheriff in town. Stay tuned for some good baseball.
