The Heat Really Are Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde

There are plenty of times when a professional sports team looks different from time to time during a season. The Miami Heat seem intent on demonstrating how different a team can look during a game. They won game one against the Sixers on Saturday afternoon, 97-89, but the game was not pretty by any stretch. Of course, the game did have some unbelievable plays in it, and at times the defensive effort of Miami was downright beautiful. That’s the point. The Heat are like that beautiful girl you take home from South Beach, only to realize later that she’s really from Alabama and not quite as hot as you thought. Eventually, you are willing to overlook flaws like missing teeth, because she really is a nice girl and it seems like you guys get along really well.
Sixers Head Coach Doug Collins told his team before the game that they would have to withstand an opening onslaught by Miami. It turned out that the first quarter belonged to Philadelphia. They played better on defense, shot over 61% from the field, and led 31-19 at the end of the period. In the second quarter, the Heat woke up and looked like a championship contender. They outscored Philly 35-18 in that second frame and carried a five point lead into halftime. The rest of the game was much of the same, up and down sprinkled with some pretty plays. The Miami players themselves looked out of sync. Wade and LeBron were both trying to get their teammates involved early, then never really seemed to get in rhythm the rest of the game. DWade got in some foul trouble and only wound up with 17 points. James finished with only 21 points, but did grab 14 rebounds. Chris Bosh played the best and most consistent of the three, scoring 25 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while doing a nice job of playing in the paint.
The good news is that the Miami Heat are up 1-0 on the Sixers. The bad news is that this Jekyll and Hyde imitation is not a sudden thing, it has been going on for most of the year. The crew from South Beach may beat a team like Philly playing like this, but if they don’t put forth a more consistent effort, the second round will be their exit round.
