PGA TOUR What It Means: April 17, 2011 — San Antonio and Beyond

A win from across the world tops this week’s What It Means:
1) Matteo Manassero is 17 years old. He doesn’t yet have a driver’s license. But he is a two-time winner on the European Tour. Manassero shot a final round 68 for a one stroke victory at the Malaysian Open today, beating a host of others including Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer.
Manassero is by far one of the most talented young golfers the world has seen in a very long time, with a complete game and the poise to be a multiple major champion. He’s now 35th in the world rankings, may very well get into the US and British Opens, and is only going to get better as time goes on. Wow.
2) McIlroy should be commended for his performance this week. After the disaster that was last week’s final round of The Masters, he overcame an extremely long flight, his clubs temporarily getting lost, and a spat of bad play to finish third, two shots back. As he himself said this week, he’s only 21 and will have a host of chances to win majors. And he probably will.
3) Brendan Steele won the Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour today. He’s another one of the 20somethings that have won this year, and made a clutch par putt for an up-and-down to clinch the victory on the 72nd hole. Add him to the list of rising players on the PGA Tour who now have a chance to elevate their games and their status against the best in the world in higher-tier events.
