Kidd & Dirk Come Up Big In Crunch Time of Game 1, Look to Carry it Into Game 2

The Dallas Mavericks enter tonight’s Game 2 after a game 1 win that is due in large part to the Mavs team play and a stellar offensive output by veteran point guard Jason Kidd. Kidd finished with 24 points going 9 of 14 from the field including 6 of 10 from the 3 point line in game 1. Kidd might not be the best shooter or have the best numbers, but he might just be one of the smartest shooters in the league. Melo could use a little of that knowledge right about now, huh. Kidd has been around the block a few times including back to back finals appearances with the NJ Nets. We all know who Jason Kidd is. But maybe only Mavs fans know his ability to give such an offensive boost to the Mavs behind the 3 point line on many nights. Kidd shot better than 50% from the field in 21 games this season and over 40% from the 3 point line in 34 games. This season 205 of his 391 field goal attempts were 3 pointers, nearly two thirds. All night the Blazers sagged off kid to collapse on others, most often Dirk. So, if Kidd takes and makes the amount of threes that he does on many nights, coupled with his basketball IQ, why do teams continue to play Kidd the way they do? I don’t know. But I say sag off him all you want. You think that Kidd will start jacking up bad shots…I don’t think so. Not in this lifetime. Kidd’s ability to score from outside in game 1 took some pressure off the rest of the Mavs including the bench in game 1. We will see what the Mavs bench will bring tonight. And we will also see how, or if Portland changes the way they guard Kidd based on his game 1 performance. My guess is they won’t. The Mavs must approach game 2 with the same plan and mindset as game 1. This could potentially be a long series, but I believe if the Mavs can get a win tonight it just might not be as long as everyone expects it to be.
Dirk didn’t have his greatest game when looking at his entire body of work in game 1, but still finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, which is pretty much right on his career playoff average. Dirk only have 10 points leading into the 4th quarter but managed to turn it up in crunch time, as we have seen many times before. After the game Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle stated that he,
“Thought the biggest, most important shot of the game was a three from the right corner that took us from down 2 to up 1…it energized our building and it energized our team, and then from that point we started to get some stops consistently.”
The bench also chipped in what was needed from them to get the W in game 1.
Lastly I will leave you with this…One of the many great things about the NBA and playoff basketball are the adjustments…and then adjustments to counter those adjustments…and then, well I think you get the point. What adjustments will each team make for game 2? Tune in and find out.
See you after game 2
