BOSTON B-RUINED: Habs Beat Bruins in Game 7; Move on to Face Washington

If there is one thing this Boston-Montreal playoff series has taught us, it’s to not even bother making predictions.

First the Habs go into Boston and take 2 games. Unbelievable.

Then when it looks like the Bruins may get swept, they take the next 2 in Montreal. Unreal.

Then when it seems that neither team can win at home, Boston takes game 5 in their own building. Crazy.

After losing 3 in a row and with no momentum, Montreal takes game 6 and forces a seventh and final game. Amazing.

Given how bizarre this series has been, I am shocked that I am so confident that the Canadiens will win tonight’s game in Boston and move on to play Washington in the next round. I am so sure that the Habs will win that I have already written my post game blog. Here it is:

For the second year in a row, the underdog Habs have advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, this time around beating the #3 seeded Boston Bruins in 7 games. The deciding game was a physical affair early on, with the Bruins getting pucks behind Montreal’s defense and finishing their hits, but eventually Montreal’s speed and skill took over and while they were outshot, they capitalized on their chances. Boston’s powerplay struggles continued into game 7, while some undisciplined penalties by the Bruins proved costly as it killed their momentum and resulted in a big power play goal midway through the game that put the Habs up 2-1. Boston never fully recovered after that and Montreal went on cruise control for the remainder of the game, winning 4-2.

For the second game in a row, all of Montreal’s big guns picked up points (Cammalleri, Plekanec, Gomez, Gionta) and Carey Price had another great performance in goal. Gomez in particular had his best game of the series for Montreal. What went wrong for Boston? No one is quite sure, but I’ll bet Andrew Ference can put his finger on it. Maybe Brad Marchand ‘nose’.

The Habs will have little time to celebrate, as they play Friday night in Washington. Philadelphia will host Tampa Bay in the other Eastern Conference matchup. Can Montreal circumvent the Caps like they did last year? We’ll know soon enough.
