Alex Burrows scored his second goal of the game when he intercepted a clearing pass from Chicago’s defenseman Chris Campoli and let go a slap shot that beat Chicago’s goalie Corey Crawford in overtime as Vancouver beat Chicago 2-1 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Burrow’s goal finally eliminated the pesky Blackhawks who had come back from a 3-0 deficit to force game 7.
Vancouver couldn’t have started game 7 any better, as they had energy and enthusiasm and scored the first goal of the game. Ryan Kesler fed Alex Burrows in the slot and he beat Crawford at 2:43 to give the Canucks the all important first goal of the game. The Canucks went back to their hitting game, outhitting & punishing Chicago through the entire game. It also looked like Luongo was back on his game stopping Toews with a big pad save. Chicago started to get the better of the play in the second half of the first period, but could not beat Luongo. Vancouver had a late power play and even though they didn’t score they had good pressure.
In the second period Chicago thought they had tied the game when Troy Brouwer poked the puck past Luongo, but it turned out the ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle. There was no scoring in the second period thanks to Chicago goalie Corey Crawford who made several big saves late in the period when Vancouver had extended pressure.
Alex Burrows had a chance to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead early in the third period when he was awarded a penalty shot when Duncan Keith pulled him down, however, Crawford made the stop. Luongo made several good stops in the third, including big saves on Ben Smith and Michael Frolik, Luongo looked very confident and seemed to have his game back. It appeared Vancouver had the game well in hand late in the third period when Duncan Keith took a hooking penalty at 16:43, but Jonathan Toews said don’t worry. Toews made a beautiful individual play when he scored on a rebound shot shorthanded sending Game 7 into overtime.
In overtime Chicago looked like they were going to complete the come back when Burrows took a penalty, but once again Luongo was there to make the big saves. Burrows was not done though, as he intercepted a clearing pass from Chicago’s Chris Campoli and blasted the puck past Crawford and sent the sellout crowd into a frenzy. The goal at 5:22 sent the Canucks into the second round where they will take on the Nashville Predators.
