Ryan Mallett kept falling. The Dolphins suddenly pull the trigger and enter the 2nd round. The fanbase gets excited. And the Dolphins pick…
RB Daniel Thomas out of Kansas State.
With an abundance of RBs available later in the draft and great free-agent RBs like Deangelo Williams or Darren Sproles available, the Dolphins TRADE UP to acquire Thomas.
Mallett would have been a great risk/reward pick by the Dolphins and ignited a fanbase that is growing incredibly frustrated with the poor choices of the front office. Mallett has some of the greatest talent in the draft and will no doubt make the Dolphins pay for years to come.
In the off-season, Jeff Ireland kept pushing that the team needed speed. Instead, they pick a big back in the mold of Brandon Jacobs or Stephen Jackson. Plus they give away their 3rd rounder, 5th rounder, and one of the 7th rounders. Way too much to give up.
In interviews following the pick, Thomas has been asked about the Wildcat. Anyone who watched the Dolphins last year knows that the Wildcat is dead and unsuccessful. Thomas threw a 70-yard touchdown pass last year. Who cares. The Wildcat is dead. If I have to watch Thomas throw passes out of the Wildcat next year, I will be a very unhappy ‘Phins fan.
As a lifelong fan, I am so done with Ireland at Sparano at this point. Get them out of Miami ASAP.
