Patriots Make a Trade? Go Figure

Well the first round kicked off last night and as always the Patriots were busy. They had the 17th and 28th picks overall. I’d like to start off by saying I am a little disappointed that they did not use all those picks they have available to move up a little in the draft and select an instant playmaker like Von Miller. I mean they could have done it considering the Falcons gave up 5 picks to get the 6th pick overall to select a perfect complement to Roddy White being Julio Jones. Anyways the Pats did what they always do and played it smart; I can’t say I am not surprised, I was just hoping they would have pulled the trigger this year and jumped up.

The Patriots did take the safe route which is fine and selected Offensive Tackle Nate Solder out of the University of Colorado. I say this is a safe pick since it isn’t a big name player that has that pressure of being a complete bust, but he’s an OT that can take some time to develop. I do not think he will be an instant starter, but definitely has that opportunity to watch the Veterans play and learn the game at the NFL level. I think Solder does have a little ways to go before he makes an impact on this Pats offense considering his combine workout. He’s a big boy coming in at just over 6’8” and weighs 319 lbs. yet he only benched 21 reps which was second lowest for his position.  However, he did have the best 20-yard shuttle as well as the best vertical jump out of all OT’s. So you know the athleticism is there, it’s just a matter of time as to when he can show it off.

For the 28th pick, the Patriots went ahead and traded it to the New Orleans Saints who selected Mark Ingram. Apparently they were not interested in anything at that spot and ended up getting another 2nd round pick for this year and an additional 1st round pick for next year. So overall I say it was a pretty good trade. Plus the Patriots start off today with the 1st pick of the second round.

It’s tough to say who they will take at the 33rd overall pick, but they have 5 picks today between the next 2 rounds and I am sure the Pats will keep busy. I would say the Pats will take a RB, QB, DE, CB and another OL however in no particular order. DE Da’Quan Bowers is a very interesting option still available that the Patriots could gamble on considering they have so many picks. Yes he has knee issues, but if he pans out, he could be exactly what the Pats are looking for in a big time pass rusher. If he doesn’t pan out, no big deal, the Pats still have plenty of picks next year as well. However, knowing the Patriots I highly doubt they will take Bowers here and will possibly trade the pick to a team desperately seeking Andy Dalton or just play it safe with another value pick to develop over the years.

The Patriots had a good 1st round and I expect a good 2nd and 3rd tonight. Look for the Pats to continue to be busy because I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they made at least 1 more trade tonight.
