The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft is complete and there were definitely some surprises. One of the biggest shocks for this writer was the Minnesota Vikings taking Florida State QB Christian Ponder with the 12th overall pick. I wasn’t really high on any of the QB’s that went ahead of him either. Ponder was the fourth quarterback taken in the first round. The three that went in front of him; Cam Newton, Jake Locker, and Blaine Gabbert all have big question marks surrounding them, and when they all went in the first ten picks, logic pointed to the Vikings waiting until the second or third round to pick a QB. Minnesota needs to patch up some holes on both sides of the line, which are aging. This draft was loaded with lineman that could have stepped in right away. Rumor is that the Vikes new Offensive Coordinator, Bill Musgrave, had a lot to do with the selection of Ponder. Viking fans better hope he’s right, because Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallet, and Colin Kaepernick are all still on the board as we head to the second round tomorrow.
