PGA TOUR What It Means: May 2, 2011 — New Orleans

Another playoff starts this week’s What It Means:

1) Bubba Watson’s playoff win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, his second win of the season, happened when he made birdie on the second playoff hole against Webb Simpson but also happened because of mental toughness. He hit it in the water on the 9th hole and at one point fell three shots behind Simpson. But he gathered his composure and made it to a playoff where he outlasted Simpson, making a three-foot birdie putt for the victory after Simpson missed his.

Bubba is now 10th in the world, arguably the best American on the planet right now, and definitely is moving up in the ranks. A major victory is certainly in his sights, and he’s been right there before, losing the PGA Championship in a playoff last year to Martin Kaymer.

2) Webb Simpson’s chances of victory in regulation took a turn for the worse when he was forced to call a penalty on himself on the 15th green. As he went to tap in for par, after he had grounded his putter, the ball moved, most likely due to the high winds. The ball moving after you’ve grounded your club is a one stroke penalty, and even though some may deem that a bad rule, a rule is a rule and you have to enforce it. He bounced back fairly well from the penalty and got into the playoff, but after the round he voiced his displeasure with the rule and wasn’t too pleased about what happened.

Look, some rules in golf are downright stupid, and that probably isn’t exactly the application the rules makers were looking at when they wrote the rule. But until its changed you have to live by it, and that’s what Simpson did. Correctly.

3) Lee Westwood, the number one ranked player in the world, won for the second straight week yesterday, this time on the European Tour in South Korea. Due to a funky PGA Tour rule, he won’t be at The Players in two weeks, but he has served notice to everyone that will be there: his game is in prime shape to go after his first major championship victory at the US Open come June.
