Angels go prospecting, come up winners.

Win more 1-run games than you lose, and good things are bound to happen. Take 2 of 3 games from the hottest team in baseball and people start believing good things are going to happen. If you win those 2 games by 1-run, and you get the picture. After taking the final 2 in Boston, the rejuvenated Angels came back home and pushed around AL Central leading Cleveland Indians.
It’s been a tough season for Torii Hunter. He not only is playing a position that he unfamiliar with, but he is the one of the few veterans in the Angels lineup. He is helping bring a lot of these you guys along. He is also the face of the organization, speaking for the team after every game. At .239, Hunter is hitting as bad as any time in his career. But, on Friday the wily veteran did what he does best, come though when needed most. Hunter won the game in the 11th inning by stroking a hard single to left field that scored Erick Aybar.
I hate to get ahead of myself, but this has the makings of a special Halo season. Every night there is a different hero. Even Vernon Wells got in to the action, slamming a 2-run home run in game 2. Wells, who continues to be offensively inept, hit his home run off Alex White, making his second major league start. I’ll try not to be so nitpicky, at least he hit something.
After his 6-0 start, Jered Weaver has now lost his last two, and he hasn’t looked too good doing it. Not only did Weaver give up 4-runs in 6 innings, but he didn’t strike out a guy. As a matter of fact, that was only the 2nd time in his career that Weaver went through a start without a strike out. Shocking as Weaver led the AL in strikeouts last year, and was 3rd this year.
Mark Trumbo is playing much better than I thought, but lets not overestimate his ability just yet. I read an article that said the Angels could Non-tender Kendrys Morales at the end of the year, and gauge interest from other clubs. That’s amazing! Trumbo has had a good 35 games, but now it’s time to get rid of the guy who carried the club last year until he got hurt. Morales is a game changer. That’s not saying Trumbo won’t be, but let’s wait and see how everything looks in August. It shocks me how we forget about a guy so quickly.
I’m glad it finally happened. You know, Hank Conger is now the full time catcher. Mathis is hitting .200, and will flourish in a reduced role. Conger is a quite a player. arm, bat and defense are his calling cards.
So 10 players got an at bat for the Halos on Sunday, 6 of them came from the Angels farm system. Remember, Callaspo started his career with the Angels before being cast off years ago. That is quite impressive, to say the least. Looking at the Angels roster, 16 of the 25 players came from the Angels farm system. If your farm system produces quality players like the Angels, success is practically guaranteed. I should add that number should go up by next year as Morales, and super stud Mike Trout will be in the lineup (most likely).
I remember when the best prospects played their best ball in another uniform. Richard Dotson, Carney Lansford & Tom Brunansky are just a few of the players that did just that. I can’t remember a time when the Angels had so many quality, home grown prospects in their lineup. Glaus, Salmon, Erstad, K-Rod, Percival, Anderson, Molina, Washburn and Lackey. 2002 World Champions–Sorry for my ignorance. I hope this set of hot prospects can do what those guys did.
I hate to do it, but what do the Angels do with Wells? He makes too much money to bench, but does he have to hit in the cleanup spot? For a formally successful Major League hitter, he sure looks lost. He should be hitting in the 8th hole, especially with that robust .179 batting average. I hope that I’ll be singing his praises in July, but right now he just pisses me off.
Angels get the White Sox the next 3 days. They swept them just 3 weeks ago. I can’t wait, I’ll be at those games.
